Kelly Olynyk Suffers Wrist Injury While Playing for Team Canada?

i

Kelly Olynyk has suffered a wrist injury while playing for Team Canada, according to a fan account from Spain. Team Canada did not qualify for the FIBA World Cup but has been playing international friendlies all across Europe over the past few weeks. Olynyk last suited up for Team Canada on August 7th in a game against Spain, but did not play today for Canada against Turkey in a 72-66 win.

The fan report (seen below as they reached out to our friends at CelticsBlog) indicates Canada coach Jay Triano (pictured below) said Olynyk had suffered a wrist injury and had returned to Boston. Canada has only one more international friendly game remaining after today on their European tour so Olynyk leaving the team early shouldn’t be alarming in terms of the severity of the wrist injury since he would have been probably been returning to Boston next week anyway. With that said, we are still trying to get additional confirmations on Olynyk’s ailment, so it’s something to keep an eye on moving forward.

Hopefully it’s not his shooting wrist, and he’ll be 100% by next month.

Sucks though, this will only spawn more ‘ermahgerd players can get injured playing international basketball, stop sending them!’ comments.

Yeah because daily pick-up games at Rucker Park with ‘no blood, no foul’ is really a lot safer.

    • BlowfishAndTheHootie

Agree 100%, international ball injury panicking is annoying.

  • Jags

Who do you guys think makes final roster?

    My Prediction:
PG: Rajon Rondo, Marcus Smart, Phil Pressley
    SG: Avery Bradley, Marcus thorton
SF: Jeff Green, Evan Turner, James Young
    PF:Brandon Bass, Jared Sullinger
C: KellyOlynyk ,Tyler Zeller, Vitor Faverani

    • hax

They can have up to 15 guys I believe.

      C: Zeller – Faverani – Anthony
PF: Olynyk – Sullinger – Bass
SF: Green – Turner – Wallace
SG: Bradley – Thornton – Young
PG: Rondo – Smart – Pressey

      Bogans/Babb/Johnson getting cut or traded.

      • Jags

Yeah but only 13 can be active at once.

        • hax

Oh, thought you meant just guys under contract. I’d say Anthony/Pressey wouldn’t be active then.

          • Jags

No I hate Perkins. he sucks

          • charlie

That’s rediculous. Look at his numbers. He’s not perfect but he does have skills

          • Jags

How is that ridiculous? He is not a mobile big man he only plays 1 position every other big man on is roster plays 2 positions.
3.4 PPG and 4.9 RPG is not good.

          • wil

why would you still want perkins lol

          • hax

Worst case scenario: He’s a back-up center with a 9.6 million dollar expiring contract.

Best case scenario: He plays like 2008-2010 Perkins, and more importantly, being BFF’s with Rondo, allows us to re-sign Rondo next summer at a good, reasonable price.

          • Jags

You don’t trade those caliber players for a worst case scenario player.

          • charlie

Pressey does not deserve the d league.

I honestly have believed for a while that one of Bradley/Thornton/Green/Turner will be moved before the start of the season. There just simply aren’t enough minutes to go around. A team only has 144 minutes between the 1, 2, and 3.

Assuming Rondo is 100% (not a definite yet), he will soak up at least 35, right? Bradley seems likely to start and has averaged 28-30 the last two seasons. Green should and would start, and his average was 34mpg last season. Let’s give the 3 starter 30mpg to be conservative.

That alone leaves just 50 total mpg at best for Smart, Thornton, Turner, Wallace, and Young at the 2 and 3. That balances well to 10mpg for each of these guys, but hell, Wallace’s putridness netted him 24mpg last year. Thornton has averaged 26 for his CAREER.
I can’t see a scenario where these guys are willing to cut minutes that much. Turner was just signed, Wallace’s $10m is practically untradeable, and Smart/Young should get significant minutes based on DA and BS’s comments. That leaves either Thornton or Green on the outside looking in, right? Maybe they don’t get something done before the season, but I think moves are coming.

      • Jags

I couldn’t see us moving Evans/Bradley they are freshly signed right?
Green and thorton I could see being moved for picks okay. Wallace hopefully will get cut.
That leaves Smart, Turner, Bradley, Rondo, young, pressey.
That’s not as much of a congested rotation as before.

    • charlie

I personally wonder about Faverani. I’m not sure he even wants to play for us. Who ar the other 2 players? You have to have wallace, he has a huge contract. Young may have to start in the d league.

      • Jags

Gerald Wallace sucks. Besides him being a veteran presence on a team that doesn’t need it he shouldn’t be here. You want the best players on your team who cares what there contract is. Young is better younger and can play SG and SF.

        • charlie

I like his hustle and spirit. I do not think that kids are always better and some kids take forever to even start to grow up. I’m not saying that he should start, I’m just saying if we can’t trade him then we should get something for him and spirit is important. Sometimes I wonder about KO.

  • Vladek

I hope this is very minor. I
m getting sick of this sh*t, not as much as Indiana fans with Paul George, but still.

  • check12check

does anyone else think it seems like players get injured way more than they used to? it’s probably just that I pay attention more now, but it seems like someone is always getting hurt

    • BlowfishAndTheHootie

It could be that we get bombarded with more injury news these days, so it seems as though there are more?

    • TMC

It’s a big thing at the National Institute for health right now. I’m not just talking about professionals, but any athlete. They are finding that sport specialization at younger and younger ages is making kids more prone to injury later in life. Lack of diversified activities leaves certain muscle groups undeveloped while others overdevelop putting undue stress on joints and ligaments.

I’d move K.O. and V.F. , Green, Bogan, Anthony…for Monroe. Then I’d be excited about this season.

    • hax

Good, but I’d rather keep KO out of the deal personally. I like his potential.

    • Jags

      K.O that’s crazy.

  • pammy dee

Oh and I’d sign Mike Moser. He was really good in summer league…actually the best one out there…

    • hax

Seems better than Babb/Johnson at this point. :) Assuming we can clear some space(trading Anthony/Bogans/Faverani)

    • Jags

Yeah he had a nice summer league.
