Dating back to the 2013-14 regular season, the Celtics have now defeated the Miami Heat in three of their last four meetings.
Player of the Game: Sporting the new hair look and extra muscle, Kelly Olynyk scored a game-high 20 points on an effective 8-of-17 shooting from the field. While he did turn the ball over a team-high six times, he accumulated a positive 17 plus/minus and four steals. He drew a crucial charge late in the game and led the Celtics to the victory.
Big Moment: Phil Pressey makes mincemeat of Shabazz Napier, and he kicks out for the Dairis Bertans 3-pointer in the first quarter.
Helped His Stock: In addition to that tremendous spin, Pressey was the contest’s leading assist man, and he impressively won a fourth-quarter jump ball. He and Marcus Smart prevented Napier from scoring in the first three quarters.
Another player who looked strong on Saturday was Colton Iverson, who put up double-digit points and blocked two of the Celtics’ four shots. He was the only player in this game with multiple blocks. The former Colorado State product communicated very well on the court and could be sporting minutes as a center for the 2014-15 Celtics.
Mike Moser contributed 17 points off the bench, as he and Bertans combined for 5-of-9 shooting from downtown.
Hurt His Stock: Chris Babb scored just four points on 1-of-5 shooting. Each of his attempts were from downtown, and he owned the game’s worst plus/minus at negative 11, but there is a lot more time for him to prove himself with four more games in this Summer League.
Takeaways: Marcus Smart looked very strong on the defensive end, but had a so-so offensive game, as he missed each of his five attempts from 3-point land. However, he did hit an important late-game jumper and his five steals led all players in the Celtics’ first game of the 2014 NBA Summer League. Coincidentally, the only Celtic to tally five steals in a game during the 2013-14 season was Babb.
Boston attempted 30 shots from downtown, continuing their propensity to shoot the deep ball.
The Celtics have an off day on Sunday before they take on the Indiana Pacers at 3:00 pm ET on Monday.
