Grades: Bulls 94, Celtics 80 (With Rajon Rondo Quotes)

Screen Shot 2014-03-31 at 10.03.33 PM

Rajon Rondo joined Mike Gorman for the Celtics broadcast as he sat out the second night of a back-to-back against Chicago. He broke down plays, smiled awkwardly at the camera pre-game, and generally got more comfortable as the evening went on until — by the end — I hoped Mike Gorman would try to talk him into doing the second half (and I don’t think I was the only one).

He also had some thoughts on his teammates. The following were his most interesting quotes on each one (in my opinion).

Boston Celtics 80 Final

Recap | Box Score

94 Chicago Bulls
Brandon Bass, PF 31 MIN | 7-10 FG | 4-4 FT | 9 REB | 3 AST | 0 STL | 4 BLK | 2 TO | 18 PTS | -6
“He’s the most athletic guy on the team besides Jeff.”

Jeff Green, SF 40 MIN | 4-13 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 1 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 4 TO | 9 PTS | -12
Mike Gorman: “Jeff’s the most athletic guy on the team?” Rondo: “By far.”

Kris Humphries, C 25 MIN | 5-7 FG | 1-2 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 11 PTS | -29
“He definitely has [impressed Rondo]. I didn’t know Kris was as good a shooter as he is. We have good chemistry. He’s a great professional.”

Jerryd Bayless, PG 33 MIN | 6-14 FG | 2-2 FT | 2 REB | 5 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 18 PTS | -20
(I’ll be honest: I didn’t catch Rondo saying a single thing about Bayless, but 4-for-9 from 3-point range is quite good.)

Avery Bradley, PG 14 MIN | 0-5 FG | 1-1 FT | 2 REB | 3 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 1 PTS | -6
“Avery kept his head up and found Jerryd for a three in transition.”

(Again, not much material to work with. Bradley went out before Rondo found his broadcasting sweet spot.)

Chris Johnson, SF 35 MIN | 1-7 FG | 3-4 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 5 PTS | 0
“He’s always around the ball. Very underrated offensive rebounder.”

Jared Sullinger, C 20 MIN | 1-6 FG | 0-0 FT | 6 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 2 PTS | -3
“Very impressed [at how Sully has played coming back from surgery]. It’s definitely tough to come off back surgery and play the way he’s been playing.”

Kelly Olynyk, C 18 MIN | 3-6 FG | 0-0 FT | 7 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 4 TO | 7 PTS | +10
“Kelly’s a really smart guy. He’s taking it all in, his first year, he listens well, plays hard. Never taking plays for granted.”

Phil Pressey, PG 19 MIN | 4-8 FG | 0-2 FT | 2 REB | 3 AST | 4 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 9 PTS | -2
“Phil’s a hard worker. Never knows when he’s going to get in, but he’s in the gym every day.” (NOTE: Pressey gets an A- mostly for his pestering defense, but also for cracking 50 percent from the field.)

Chris Babb, SG 5 MIN | 0-1 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -2
“Who’s that guy?” JOKES.

Brad Stevens

“He’s in my way! Get out my way.”

Two Things We Saw

  1. The game itself was very competitive until the fourth quarter, when Chicago simply out-executed Boston. With just eight games remaining and the lottery (and two potential wins against Philadelphia) looming large, this was an important loss. But after playing the Bulls — a legitimate threat to make the Eastern Conference Finals — tough for seven consecutive quarters, it was a shame to see the Celtics get rolled in the fourth.
  2. Rondo really was a fun analyst. Before the game, Stevens mentioned that Rondo was told “what he couldn’t talk about,” and at one point, it almost seemed like he was pushing his limits a bit. Rondo broke down a play in detail, pointing out Boston’s weave action and describing how Stevens knew Chicago liked to defend. All in all? More Rondo broadcasts would be strongly supported from my quarter. He sincerely seemed to enjoy himself, and the more fun he had, the more fun we had watching him. It was a nice way to break up all the monotonous losses.

Tonight Rondo’s sitting out, still an impression will last,
As with Gorman he calls the game, his first broadcast!
Home and home, back to back, Cs’ and Bulls’ joints.
Noooo! Is Maxwell giving Rondo some talking points?

Bayless in for Rondo who says he creates his own shot,
A polite way of describing that dribbling habit he’s got?
Can’t argue with his competitiveness, he gets going!
He’d like to stay a Celtic, his skills he is showing.

Bulls Mascot dropping popcorn on Rondo’s head.
Bulls a 6-0 run, Cs have not led.
Cs a 10-2 run, then a lead we did see!

Rondo’s doing a great job, Cs within 1 end Q1,
Cs great ball movement, some D, an 8-0 run!
OLYNYK FOR THREE! Johnson always comes to play–
So said Rondo–from his very first day.

Pressey great play at both ends of the floor!
Cs no transition D helps the Bulls score.
Bulls went on an 11-2 run,
Cs were up 9, then 2, when Q2 was done.

(Ugh) Maxwell in for Rondo to start Q3,
Second half AB is out, a sore ankle has he.
GREEN FOR THREE! Refs are ruling this game.
For them there’s no consequence, it’s a shame.

Bass overpowered Noah, used a little sky hook!
Cs aggressive on D–a new (great) look.
Bulls an 8-0 run, are the Cs out of gas?
Bench came in, rest for Green, Hump, Bass.

PRESSEY FOR THREE! Gotta close the quarter,
Well, said Rondo, who was a great reporter!
Cs within 1 to start Q4,
    Bulls a 13-0 run, Cs can’t score.

Cs relying on perimeter shooting, too tired for paint,
Noah’s great in Q4s, missing shots the Bulls ain’t.
When the game looks over, his best skills we see.

Bass played great. Cs had heart, showed no quit!
Playoff hopes are gone, we’ll get over it.
We’re building with these pieces, we’ll get more,
Next season we’ll have a better team on the floor.
