4/82: Celtics-Grizzlies Grades

Boston Celtics 88 Final
Recap | Box Score
95 Memphis Grizzlies
Brandon Bass, PF 23 MIN | 3-11 FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 3 BLK | 1 TO | 6 PTS | -14
Bass has been scorching hot on the offensive end this season. Tonight he cooled off a bit, shooting just 3-11 from the field. Despite the regression on offense, he made things very difficult for Zach Randolph by using his quickness to both front him and his bulk to draw offensive fouls.
Jeff Green, PF 40 MIN | 6-12 FG | 9-12 FT | 5 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 22 PTS | -13
As I stated in my initial thoughts on this game, Jeff Green’s performance was stellar overall. He made his biggest impact through the first three quarters and failed to assert himself when the team needed a score. Even with that, Green made a huge step toward being the leader and best player on this C’s team.
Gerald Wallace, SF 28 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 3 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 0 PTS | -11
Wallace does so many little things on the court to make his presence known. So many that I hadn’t realized that he didn’t attempt a field goal. After making his mark through rebounds, assists, steals, and energy he left the game with an undisclosed knee injury. In my uninformed and uneducated opinion, it doesn’t seem serious.
Vitor Faverani, C 28 MIN | 2-4 FG | 0-0 FT | 6 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 3 TO | 5 PTS | -19
Poor Faverani. His body must feel like complete jelly after going through Greg Monroe, Andre Drummond, Zach Randolph, and Marc Gasol in the span of two nights. While it wasn’t an 18 rebound game, he still made his a statement on this game with a solid 5 points and 6 boards. Here’s hoping there’s a nice ice bath in his future.
Avery Bradley, PG 32 MIN | 6-12 FG | 2-2 FT | 0 REB | 3 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 14 PTS | -13
This is the type of offensive output that will earn Bradley an acceptable contract extension. Consistency would be a “win-win.”
Jared Sullinger, PF 21 MIN | 7-11 FG | 0-0 FT | 5 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 16 PTS | +12
Sully got over some tough whistles to have a fantastic overall offensive game. He hit some fadeaway jumpers from the post and even hit some threes. Shades of what Sullinger could be to the most optimistic Celtics’ fan.
Kelly Olynyk, PF 25 MIN | 1-8 FG | 2-2 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 4 TO | 4 PTS | +7
Olynyk continued to play hard but missed some very makeable shots. If he made more of those, he would have earned himself a higher grade.
Jordan Crawford, SG 25 MIN | 4-7 FG | 2-2 FT | 2 REB | 4 AST | 3 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 12 PTS | -1
This is what the Celtics were praying for last season.
Courtney Lee, SG 19 MIN | 4-5 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 9 PTS | +17
See “Jordan Crawford.”

That was another pretty solid game from the C's. If Jerryd Bayless doesn't go off in the 4th, the Celtics win that game. It is worth noting that Bayless did his damage in the pick-and-roll, which seems to be a consistent issue through these first games. The Bucks rally was the same – just pick-and-rolling them to death. Green was assertive nearly all game, which you like to see, but took only 3 shots in the 4th quarter, all 3's. Olynyk is still waiting to get fully aclimated to the speed of the game. I still don't like Jordan Crawford, but he gives them a little playmaking in the half-court that they don't seem to get from anyone else.

The C's half-court offense is a straight-up abomination. They spent the second half swinging the ball from one side to the other, to get a post-up opportunity that starts with 8 second left on the shot clock. They are so much better when they push the ball up the floor and get into their offense as quickly as possible.

Their problem is they don't have a go to guy in the 4th that you throw the ball to and he can go 1 on 1 and either score or get fouled. That was Pierce. Green should be that guy but he doesn't have the mindset to do it.

As far as 4th quarter execution that's because we don't have a true PG on the floor. Crawford is definitely thinking shot first and I'm still not sold on Bradley as a PG either.

For the life of me I do not understand why Humphries has been a dnp ? I have watched him over the years and he can teach some of these guys a thing or two. Why not play him at center once in a while off the bench. He deserves a chance.
I am glad to see the coach grade. This was the best played game yet. Offense is and will continue to be a big problem. The offense seems to flow better with Jordan Crawford handling the point.

Faverani-Sullinger as a front court is the gritty, tough inside presence we just haven't had since Perkins-Garnett. Faverani is already far better on offense than Perkins. Sullinger is 21 and hitting 3's which Garnett never had. This is a high potential front court.

If Rondo comes back playing like he was before the injury, I feel we have three pieces to our team.

Bradley got destroyed on defense in the 4th. Simple pick and rolls were getting Bayless wide open shots. He misses shots that any NBA SG makes with their eyes closed.

Green makes some awesome plays but he isn't a consistent force. Pierce had a green aura around him on offense, so every Celtics fan would see him even if he didn't have the ball, because we all knew he would be part of the reason we scored. Green disappears until he gets the ball.

Bass-Bradley-Green-Expiring Contract Humphries + all those draft picks. We have the assets to get Wiggins/Parker and a great SG as well. For Rondo-Sully-Fav to succeed, SG & SF need to be all-stars.

I also wouldn't mind seeing Brooks starting over Wallace at SG now. Hustle only goes so far, our main swingman not scoring is pretty poor.

      Agreed about those three guys.

    • YouSerious?

Is Bradley supposed to magically go through the body of whoever's screening him? Three of the shots Bayless hit in the 4th quarter were off of solid screens, and Bradley still nearly recovered. Shouldn't he get help from, I don't know, his teammates?

Good things are happening for our young guys. This season's goal is to keep making those strides. I just pray that we don't fall into that "we're tanking" type of play, where no one tries to actually win anymore. That's why I think keeping guys like Bass and Wallace on the forefront is highly important. Guys that play the game with the same level of commitment every night.
The bigs are already proving that, if anything, they're a smart group of guys. Their adjustments from game to game show that they understand what they're supposed to be doing.
More importantly though, this situation is forcing our "high potential" hotshots handling the ball, to put their money where their mouth is. I like how they're responding, especially Crawford, who seems to have grown 5 years since May. He still has his "wtf is he doing" moments, but he's embracing the responsibility of making the offense work instead of trying to prove he can make every shot he takes…
