Some news stories involving athletes make plenty of sense.
Bill Russell getting arrested, on the other hand? Nope. Nope nope nope. Does not compute.
According to the Seattle news station, Russell was cited by Port of Seattle police on a state charge for allegedly bringing a handgun into a prohibited area. He has a permit for the .38-caliber Smith & Wesson, the station reported, but firearms are prohibited in carry-on baggage, where his handgun was found at a routine screening. The gun was confiscated and Russell was detained for about 30 minutes, according to the Boston Globe.
In addition to any criminal charges, the 79-year old is likely to see a civil penalty of between $3,000 to $7,500.
While trying not to speculate too much on a case we don’t know much about, this seems like a pretty clear case of a man forgetting what was in his carry-on bag. Russell would have been detained for much longer than half an hour if there was any malicious intent behind his actions and good lord did I just say “malicious intent” and “Russell’s actions” in the same sentence? Nothing makes sense anymore. We’ll keep you posted on any further developments with this story.
