Pierce, Garnett, Terry To Brooklyn? Officially Serious

Seismic trade talks between the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets have dominated all NBA discussion leading up to tonight’s draft, and deservedly so. Here’s the latest on a deal that would send Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Jason Terry to an Atlantic Conference rival, pouring gasoline on a celebrated era while simultaneously nurturing a promising renovation. Yahoo!’s Adrian Wojnarowski (who else?) has more

Boston would also most likely receive Kris Humphries and his expiring $12 million contract, and soon-to-be 31-year-old Gerald Wallace, who shot under 40% from the floor last season, averaged less than eight points per game, and is owed approximately $30.4 million over the next three years.

Overall the deal isn’t bad, and looking at it with a glass half full mentality, the team’s win-loss record next season could be poor enough to make the franchise-altering 2014 lottery relevant, but is this the best they can do?

  • Pauper

I'm in Celtics fan in NY. This deal makes tremendous sense for both sides except getting Wallace who nobody wants. Celtics get picks to rebuild in 2014 after they tank it which means they can be decent in 2015. For the Nets they are all in. They have to be one of the favorites to win it all and if they pull it off, this catapults them into the big leagues.

  • roadsidenotes

If the C's pull the trigger on this deal as constructed, they will have at least two first round draft picks in 2014, 2015, and 2016. That's a good deal for a team that has drafted better than average (Green, Sully, Rondo and Bradley were either drafted by Boston or–in the case of Green–traded for a player Boston drafted).

  • james patrick

Next year, we can all be Nets fans cheering on KG, Pierce and Terry while are C's enter the lottery zone! We knew this day was coming. GO NETS!!!!

    • hax

Will take a lot of phone calls, but we can still come out of this with Rondo-Bradley-Green-Smith-Jefferson. 4 all star caliber players & an all nba defender. Best case scenario at this point. Imagine a play-off team with all those draft picks in their pocket?

    • Mark

Sorry but if this trade goes down as constructed I'm rooting hard for the Nets to not make the playoffs. I'm a Celtics fan first and foremost and a chance to have two lottery picks in an extremely deep draft would accelerate the rebuild process by years.

      • james patrick

I remember the lean years after Bird, McHale, Parish, far too well. Sometimes rooting for your favorite team ins't exactly about rooting for them to win when they're rebuilding. We're not going anywhere next year. It is what it is. I hope we're a top 5 lottery pick team next year. It's important for us as fans to be realistic about next season. Rondo should pull a D Rose and rehab all year. Need to focus on 2015 and beyond.

  • hax

This leaves us with just Rondo-Bradley-Green though. Sure we could start reggie evans and he'll average 30 rpg but still…
Danny HAS to flip Humphries & Wallace for young players/draft picks. I'm sure contenders around the league would give up a little for these guys. Not to mention Rondo gave Kris rabies last season. Even a 2nd round pick for each would be good just to dump the contracts. Josh Smith & Al Jefferson baby.

  • http://twitter.com/pjgaudie @pjgaudie

With those two (Evans, Humphries), our rebounding would be incredible all of a sudden.

    • fabzzz

And everything else would be worse hahaha

  • Sully

This is a little bit scary. I'm not naïve to think that the day wouldn't come when the Celtics would need to rebuild however not like this. Sure we would have players like Rondo, Bradley, Green, and I could even say that Melo and Sullinger could be solid as well. Then you have to assume that Bass and Crawford can be consistent enough to keep us decent. But Pierce and Garnett are leaders and surely the Celtics can do better than Humphries and Wallace (two very mediocre players at best) and 3 first round draft picks that MAY OR MAY NOT pan out! There is no guarantee that those picks are going to be worth it in the end. I do give credit that the Celtics do draft very well….I'm just uneasy on putting all their chips into something of a gamble.

    • dslack

3 first round picks is a pretty good haul for a 37 year old and a 35 year old.

    • GowGow

Why so negative? It's not scary at all. Having two 1st rounders for the next three years is what any team can dream of going into rebuilding.

  • High Rollers

So… Kevin Garnett coached by… Jason Kidd? Seriously?

    • CelticsBIG3

      Totally agree here. Awkward.

  • DreMo

I love the way this is STARTING to unfold .. as long as it is not the start of the immediate finish.

  • High Rollers

Now the second team to ask this legend to leave. KG never deserved this.

    • Vincent

Perhaps he doesn't want to be part of the rebuild? perhaps it doesn't matter. The NBA is a business, not a foster home for aging expensive players. Grow up.

      • CelticsBIG3

What do you mean "grow up"? You don't have to act like an asshole to tell someone who is making a reasonable statement about a legend of the NBA to "grow up". The fact is before the NBA was "a business" (which "business" means players hold teams hostage and then in return teams show no loyalty to players who gave them all there best years) teams showed respect to aging players. You "grow up".

        • GowGow

Even if showing respect means denying the team any possibilities of getting better in the future?

    • check12check

the T-wolves never asked him to leave. He pretty much forced them to send him elsewhere practically ala dwight howard. He hated their front office, and wanted out. now, he knows he only has one year left in him. he wants to be somewhere where he can win

      • Josh_5

The T-wolves portion of this statement couldn't be more bullshit.

  • W2.

    So…..

    Rondo/Larkin
    Bradley/Lee
    Green/T. Williams
    G. Williams/Bass
    Sully/Evans

    Bench: Fab, Crawford, Shav, Humph.

    Watchable?

    • W2.

      Or…..

      Rondo/T. Williams
      Bradley/Lee
      Green/Shabazz
      G. Williams/Bass
      Sully/Evans

      Bench: Fab, Crawford, Shav, Humph.

    • CelticsBIG3

Watchable? Not really. What a joke "Celtic Pride" is now. Its just a catch phrase to sell merchandise.

    • Morpheus

It' will be worse than the Bobcats.

  • cos

hax, in order to get teams to take wallace and his contract, the celtics would be giving a pick to take him off their hands.

Can't believe this is how it ends for Pierce. traded to the nets. this hurts.

    I hope KG says no.

    • Mark

You do understand that if no trades are made its likely the Celtics are left with no assets down the road? I for one hope KG says yes because the band is officially broken up with Doc gone. To have six first round picks the next three seasons with a high probability of one of those years being two lottery picks is huge for a rebuild project. Danny would died for this opportunity when he first took over the Celtics.

      • MSTRKRFT

Someone talking with more than one brain cell, thank goodness. We don't see eye to eye on everything, but we agree on this. Danny is just speeding up the inevitable rebuilding process as quickly as he can, but so many limp-wristed, weak Celtics fans are crying "foul". One to two more years of KG and Pierce won't do us anything. Time to grab as many picks and young assets as we can.

  • Rob

Is it possible to use the amnesty clause on Gerald Wallace if the deal goes through? Also woj is reporting that they might bring in a western conference team. Any hope of actually getting a quality player out of this?

    • dslack

No, can't amnesty a player who wasn't on the team when the last CBA was signed.

  • brian

This is ridiculous and pitiful to destroy the team this way

    • Mark

So, do nothing and get zero assets? The Celtics aren't contenders now. Need to get assets and six first rounders in three years are huge. Unprotected first rounders could be huge to getting the next superstar that wants out.

  • Morpheus

I don't like where this is going.

  • DreMo

I am willing to wait it out a couple of weeks – so many #1's and only a couple BAD deals left you could reasonably see a quick flip of a couple picks with a couple parts (ie adding Josh Smith & Big Al the same off season) giving 2013-14 a totally different look. Doc leaving may have given DA juice to accelerate as quickly as possible ("I'll show you type of deal), fielding a young, competitive team without the tank, with picks in the pocket.

  • someguyinsac

Wake me up when the rest of the nightmare is over and the team has been gutted.

(I know it has to be done, but it doesn't mean I have to like the way it gets done.)

  • CG12

I love it and hope it happens. Much love to KG and PP, but they would be better off on a Nets team where they don’t have to carry so much of the load and the Cs would be in great position for the future. Get it done, Danny. My guess, however, is that KG refuses to go to the Nets.

    • CelticsBIG3

Don't have to carry as much of the load? There's really not a big difference between them playing with Rondo and them playing with Williams. As far as Joe Johnson goes? He proves year in and year out he is an overpaid hack.

      • CG12

Weeeell, Williams can actually shoot it a bit, as can Joe Johnson. Add in a center with a real offensive game, and PP and KG don't need to force their offense. Seems pretty obvious.

  • GowGow

It's funny how people want to rebuild by swapping Pierce and Garnett for LeBron and Durant.

Wake up, Celtics fans! For God's sake.

    • Josh_5

We get it, your not emotionally attached at all to Pierce or KG. It doesn't mean you need to insult the intelligence of people who have been following this team and their players for a very long time.

  • fabzzz

I would like this deal a lot more if we could yet a prospect too, maybe marshon brooks or that mezra tetlovic guy. Some guy that we could groom. Hell at this point I’d even take blatche

  • The Cardinal

I'm going off on a tangent/rant here and I'm sure I've asked this before: why are so many Celtic fans fascinated with Josh Smith? I just don't see it.

Yes, he has his moments (just as every other NBA starter does from time to time), but he has absolutely no more upside and what he is ain't all that, he really hasn't shown he can elevate his teammates level of play, he's pissy and pouty much too often, and he's never led a number of really athletic and talented Hawk teams to anything but a number of 1st round playoff exits. It just seems to me he is exactly the type of player a rebuilding roster does not need: Antoine Walker 2.0.

Seriously, can someone explain this man crush phenomenon? Anyway, as for the main topic – make it so, Mr. Ainge!

    • Sophomore

+100. I'm not sold on Smith in general, but he'd be especially awful for this team. Max contract, very inefficient on offense, disappears in the biggest games. He might be enough to keep us around 40 wins. Woo-hoo.

  • Blujigs

See..Ray Allen was right after all!

  • Blujigs

See..Ray Allen was right after all when he left Boston.

  • jpbl1976

This is just too depressing. It says something about this deal that the deal to trade KG for DeAndre Jordan doesn't sound so bad anymore. This isn't even a poo-poo plater. It's a crap sandwich we're getting for the Truth and the Ticket.

Obviously, ownership got together with Danny and told him to rebuild quickly: that means tanking 2014 for the chance at drafting Andrew Wiggins. I wouldn't be surprised if they told Rondo to pull a Derrick Rose and not come back until 2014-2015.

Actually, if I'm Rondo and I see all this, I'm taking my time in rehab now and planning on using the rest of the 2013-2014 season to work on my jumper and 3-point shot with Mark Price or Chip Engelland.

I wonder: if Danny's master plan doesn't work out, will be get fired and become Doc's assistant in Lob City next season?
