Celtics-Knicks Grades

Boston Celtics 89 Final
Recap | Box Score
108 New York Knicks
Chris Wilcox, PF 12 MIN | 1-2 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | -11

The Celtics needed Wilcox to step up in Garnett’s absence and he was a virtual no-show. Wilcox’s low-light of the night was missing a hook shot from a foot away.

Brandon Bass, PF 22 MIN | 1-4 FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 2 PTS | +5

Bass spent a lot of time switching on to Carmelo Anthony and was adequate. As for his offense, Bass gets a lot of his good looks when the ball is moving and he finds himself switched onto a smaller defender, open of a midrange jumper, or blowing by a recovering defender. No ball movement? This is what you get.

Jeff Green, PF 35 MIN | 10-14 FG | 5-8 FT | 4 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 27 PTS | -14

Green was one of the few guys that actually brought it tonight. It’s a shame to waste an excellent offensive performance from Green when everyone else put up a stinker. He was assertive and comfortable.

Paul Pierce, SF 32 MIN | 6-16 FG | 8-10 FT | 15 REB | 5 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 24 PTS | -11

It’s amazing to see Pierce be so effective on the glass. Despite the lack of lift, Pierce still managed to pull down 15 boards through relentless hard-work. Although, I could have done without some of the early shot clock three attempts.

Avery Bradley, PG 24 MIN | 1-5 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 2 PTS | +5

Bradley was in foul trouble for most of the evening which really limited his most useful on-court attribute: his defense. We’ve been saying Bradley’s offense needs to come around for quite a while now, but now it’s paramount to the C’s success. When Bradley can’t be counted on to hit midrange jumpers and corner threes, the passing angles become harder and harder to find.

D.J. White, PF 7 MIN | 1-1 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | +3

Why can’t he get more playing time?

Shavlik Randolph, PF 14 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -14

Not the greatest follow-up performance to the greatest performance of Randolph’s career. The only noticeable part of Randolph’s time on the court was his man continually beating him through pick and rolls.

Jordan Crawford, SG 25 MIN | 3-10 FG | 4-4 FT | 2 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 10 PTS | -23

I really didn’t like Crawford’s demeanor in this game. He complained to the officials, took shots early in the shot clock, stepped into some long-twos, and chucked threes when the C’s were down big late in the game.

Courtney Lee, SG 28 MIN | 5-11 FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 10 PTS | -17

Whenever the Celtics needed a big shot to get back into the game, Lee was there to throw up a brick. I’m going to chalk it up to getting his ankle back under him because I’m a glass half-full kind of guy.

Terrence Williams, SG 19 MIN | 1-4 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | -7

Please take it to the basket whenever you get into the game.

Jason Terry, SG 21 MIN | 3-7 FG | 1-1 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 8 PTS | -11

Terry was brought to the C’s to hit open threes. He did not do that effectively tonight.

Kevin Garnett, C DNP LEFT ANKLE MIN | FG | FT | REB | AST | STL | BLK | TO | PTS |

Once again, A+.

Doc Rivers

Rivers did little to motivate his team to get back into the game. He also only took a single timeout (if memory serves) to attempt to right the ship. Tonight was one of those games where getting thrown out may have been Rivers’ only play to light a fire. I hate those kinds of games.

  • Anthony

KG, Pierce, and JGreen's grades are great. Maybe Rondo deserve an A+ too. I know he would've brought it.

I'm still amazed at the low percentage of JET's shot. I can't count how many times this season, I've raised my hands assuming a make on an OPEN 3 only to be let down and have to put my hands down in shame. I don't want to bring this up but Ray didn't let me know down nearly as much (except for the 0-14 Finals performance…sighhh…SMH)

Wilcox is the WORSE defender on this team. You would think 2 years is enough to figure it out. Can we get mulligan and keep Collins instead of Wilcox?

  • IBleedGreen

I don’t know who I want to see get traded more this offseason, Rondo or Bradley (hopefully both). But I have to say Bradley for now. His offense sucks big time even his defense can’t make up for it.

    • check12check

his lack of O is fine if he has 4 other guys around him who can do enough of that to make the few things he can do be dangerous. his D is amazing when it is going, but has been lackluster of late

    • Mark

Not that I favor trading either but fact is the whos better debate between Rondo and Bradley was silly at the time and worse now.

  • Anthony

On a non-Celts related note, just want to say a prayer for and wish Kevin Ware all the best. I don't watch college basketball much anymore but just reading about the gruesome injury is frightening. I don't even want to look and see the extent of the injury. I've seen the Sam Bowie injury and can only hope it's nowhere near as bad. Rondo dislocating his elbow, Baron Davis twisting his knee were already pretty tough to watch.

    • CelticsBIG3

This was much much worse than those. I saw it happen live on TV

      • check12check

i just watched his injury on youtube, and i cannot even understand it. that dude needs some calcium in his diet! his leg just collapsed! it was unreal. I'm afraid to go for dunks now.

      • Anthony

I thought it might be even though I just glanced through article and the picture with the kid writhing in pain. It must've been a gruesome sight.

      • Jimmy

Live in person would be one thing. No difference between live or recorded TV bro.

    • Morpheus

Yeah, it was a weird freakish injury. I mean his legs just gave way on a otherwise normal landing. Prayers go out to the kid.

  • elroz

Wilcox, Bass, Green had as many boards as J.R. Smith! He is the smallest guy out there.

Wilcox and Terry have been two of the most disappointing players this season. They just consistently don't step up. It is rare when they put up a quality performance.

I cannot imagine Wilcox being here next year. Terry could get traded: are you telling me you cannot find a decent defender who could shoot around 38% from 3 point line? It would be better than Terry – who is a poor defender.

Also: the Knicks are 1-8 the last two years in the playoffs. MAYBE this is the year they actually go past the first round. Who knows. But Doc is NOT about to let all his tricks and plays show late in the season against a team he will likely face in the playoffs, or get his team to put up a playoff type effort right now. Doc has plans. I know I complain a lot. But I suspect Doc is scheming.

  • Danny

Im resigned to the 7th seed at this point. Just bring on the playoffs already. The regular season is just injuries waiting to happen at this point.

  • CG12

The most disappointing thing about a game like this is how it degenerates into each guy thinking they can hit a 5-point shot. This is the kind of game that makes you want to throttle Jordan Crawford. But there isn't a whole lot distinguishing this game from the big (ultimately unsuccessful) comeback against the Mavs, except a couple of Crawford shots going in, rather than rattling out. When you are getting your ass kicked like that, why not just try to work on some things you might actually use in a playoff game? Have the second team try to run some actual offense. If it sucks, no big deal, and then you have some additional game reps that will hopefull help them get better in the long run. Instead, it seems like the C's go to "just roll it out there and play" mode. I am a huge fan of attacking basketball, but it needs to be leavened with some discipline, and that has been lacking of late.

  • CG12

I'm pretty much done with Wilcox at this point. I can see why they were willing to give him up in the Crawford trade, rather than Collins. For every alley-oop dunk there are at least 5 missed box-outs or rotations. Seems like a good guy and a hard worker, but he doesn't see the game. When you have him and Bass out there, you have almost no basketball IQ on your back line, and with the C's defense you need big guys who know how to read and recover. Greg Smith, Mike Scott, Chris Copeland, the list goes on and on.

teams got to watch some tapes on shav and he is going to be neutralized now. hope you enjoyed your big night buddy, but that's a thing of the past.

I REALLY like what JG is doing right now. I hope he builds on it. he is our only hope long-term. i know that sounds kind of scary, but it's pretty much true.

which brings me to my next point: I don't have any faith at this point in the celtics getting out of the first round. sure, i believe in a 10% – maybe – chance of them pulling out a miracle, but i just don't see it happening. Perhaps if KG and PP pull out a gem of a performance 4 nights strong, but that won't happen (even though i have to say, the captain has been THE MAN lately. he is either putting up points, or doing everything except getting the Gatorade every night). I kind of hope they die easy; otherwise, they will get too heavily invested in what the old men can do. I'd love KG and PP for like 5 mil off the bench, but otherwise they are going to bring this team borderline lottery status again next year. no offense guys. KG is even on my GOAT team as a reserve if I had to make one, but it's time to accept a lessened role on a team. maybe if they get handled they will get that idea.

sorry to be negative guys, but the 6-8 seed is like the worst spot to be in in the entire nba. i know we can beat anyone on any given night, but i dont think we can over a series
