More Like Jarryd BayMORE: Grizzlies 110, Celtics 106

The Celtics have an uncanny ability to let a role player completely go off.  Tonight, that was Jerryd Bayless.  The Grizz combo guard scored 30 points while generally making the C’s look silly.

The Celtics were down 20 late in the fourth quarter when Doc Rivers put in the end of the bench to sop up the remaining minutes.  Instead of turtling against Memphis’ starters, Jordan Crawford nearly stole a victory all by himself.  The best part of the comeback was Rivers’ decision to leave the bench in until he went with an all shooter lineup down four with seconds left.  The worst part was watching Jeff Green dribble the ball off his foot and watch as it slowly rolled out of bounds.  No dive on the floor.  No emotion other than a slight eye-roll.  That is Jeff Green.

Grades later…

Celtics have been getting next to nothing from Bradley. His defense overshadows how bad he is at virtually every other aspect of the game.

    • kg215

Bradley is not bad at "virtually every other aspect of the game," the problem is some people had expectations that were way too high (guess you were one of them). He is still a good cutter, he just can't finish if the shot is well contested (good 1 on 1 defender or shotblocker in the way). He is a decent jump shooter, but he takes too many of them probably because he can make some and he has the green light from Doc Rivers. Definitely needs to improve his shot selection but he is still a young talented player who is a great defender. His offense is not there yet but getting better, don't forget Rondo is out so Avery has to run point and we all know Avery is NOT a point guard.

Bradley was thrown into a PG role by Doc when Rondo went down. This is not smart, and yet Doc continues to persist in this utter IDIOCY. He should use Lee and Terry as PG, not Bradley. When Lee was playing, Bradley still was the one serving the PG role. Why?

Jeff Green had his start and was his usual self tonight – especially with that shit at the end of the game. Oh, no1 Don't criticize him – remember those two great games he had against Phoenix and Miami: Wow! Ok. Yes. Wow!. But this is not a league of two great games. I don't recall the last time KG scored 30 points on the Celtics – but look at what he bring every night. Between hard working but low-talent Bass, and high talent but flaccid Green, this tam sure has some odd f***ing pieces. Add in a non factor like Terry to that.

Playoffs couldn’t come soon enough. Just finish the season 8th seed if they have to. I wanna see who’s real and who’s fake on this roster.

    • elroz

Well put. Go to the 8th seed and test yourself. No point in trying to avoid Miami. Rest the players a little and use the 8th seed.

  • layibiyi

haha, thats exactly how we see Tony Allen. I could argue Bradley's offensive game is better :)

    Good game though

  • InsertMatrixNameHere

I would rather see the Heat in the first round than miss playing them because the bucks bang em out in 4.

    • kg215

The bucks can't bang anyone out, in the regular season they are doing okay but they won't be able to beat anyone else in the East come playoff time let alone the Heat.

It is fitting that the Celtics had a chance to bring it within 1 point very late in the game, but Terry – one of the main underachievers and disappointments this season – missed that essential free throw even though he is a good FT shooter. The next play, Jeff Green dribbled the ball of his foot.

    Nice duo.

I hope Doc finally realizes: 1. don't use poor Avery as a PG. 2. Play Shavlik Randolph and White 10 min a game: Randolph rebounds very well – very well. White can block shots and has a reliable 15-ft jumper. Am I the only one seeing this?
They made a run with these guys on the floor.

  • KillerGymRat

I turned the game off when the C's went down by 20. Then was shocked to see the final score later. Wish I got to see the attempted comeback.

Were T-Will and White as impressive as their stats?

4 blocks in just over 7 minutes is huge and T-Will went a perfect 4 for 4.

It goes to show how misleading stats are though. Green's statline looks solid with 4 ast, 2 blks and 5 rebs, but having see his play it was an efficient job of hide an seek, with him mostly hiding. Teams definitely watched tape on the Miami game. The lane is now closed to him.

    • High Rollers

He needs to stay aggressive consistently and hasn't in the three losses since Miami, but to be fair, and Doc addressed this after the Miami game, Jeff isn't going to have Miami-like match-ups every night. He has to find a way to do better against bigger teams like Memphis. At least be more efficient. It's about decision making as much as being aggressive in those less than optimal match-ups.

    • Anthony

Majority of the credit of the final run goes to JCrawford. The CBA crew were just the beneficiaries of his aggressiveness. They do deserve some minutes going forward though, especially with how poor Wilcox and JET has played lately.

Not sure why but the CBA is a collective 3-16 (18.7%) from the FT. It's a small sample but 18.7% is horrible any way you look at it.

Your assessment of JGreen is spot-on. Outside of Pierce, I much rather see him take shots over anyone else. But it seems once he missed the two open corner 3s, he went into "hide" mode. After the Miami game, every team already knows to clog the lane and play his drives to the right. He's got to go to the post for the mini-hook and just keep shooting and for the defense to play him outside.

  • NZNICK33

This is officially the "We Hate Jeff Green" website.

    • Anthony

It's unfortunate but it seems that way. It has been tiring for me to defend him as everyone points the finger at him anytime the team stumbles. I'm not saying some of the criticism isn't warranted but not everything is his fault.

Nobody sees the 5 TO by Pierce (and 7 TO in the Miami game) but they notice JGreen dribbling the ball off his foot when the game has been decided barring a miraculous 4 point play.

      - Wilcox has been horrible defensively and pass-able offensively
      - JET has been a shooting slump pretty much all year
      - AB has been pretty bad offensively
      - Bass has been terrible all year except for a few games here and there in the past 10

  • Kafel

When Avery Bradley is best for C's offense? When he is on bench… Really, he is blowing layups and can't shot off the dribble but shotting anyway.. That would be ok with 2s on clock but not with 16s to play! And as You all wrote earlier he is no PG so should be playing SG, don't understand Doc on this.

  • swissflix

thought i was watching the 2006-2007 celtics with an overachieving paul pierce and a cast of underachievers. totally disorganized basketball. brandon bass is not able to catch a pass without fumbling it and jeff green, well, i am not getting there.
avery bradley was a ballhog tonight.
poor paul. at least he's got crawford, i like that kid. great bounce pass to wilcox in the fourth. tons of effort and passion coming from jcrawford.

  • hydrofluoric

The biggest limitation of Avery offensively is his inability to find the open man for a good dish. When he takes it to the rack he can't dish out to the spot-up shooter and when he's running a pnr he can't find the open cutter (Wilcox was waving his arms in utter frustration right under the basket during at least one pullup 22-footer that went in).

The bench got us back in the game; they should have been afforded the chance to win it.

  • check12check

the celtics just looked terrible. true, no KG, but the grizz had no gasol. the defense was abysmal. they gave open shots away like they were Oprah. "you get an open shot, you get an open shot, EVERYONE GETS AN OPEN SHOT!!!!" jarred bayless lights us up? please. the only thing i was content with was that Z-RO didn't totally destroy us. the score is misleading; this was a pretty much blow-out until the trash bench dudes sorta saved us. some of the worst celtics basketball i have seen all season.

"The worst part was watching Jeff Green dribble the ball off his foot and watch as it slowly rolled out of bounds. No dive on the floor. No emotion other than a slight eye-roll. That is Jeff Green."

Bullcr*p. I saw Green's face when that ball slid away, and I saw nothing but pain. Dive on the floor? For what? For show? He couldn't have come close.

Criticizing player personalities because they don't rah-rah every chance they get is a cheap shot. Some players like Terry, Pierce & Garnett do, some like Green, Bradley, & Rondo don't. So what? That doesn't mean they don't play with passion simply because it doesn't show on their face.

right? the guy scored 43 one night and showed 0 emotion the whole time

guy scored 30+ in a win showed 0 emotion.

  • http://twitter.com/kgainez @kgainez

that is hilarious that you all blame JG like JET didn't just miss a crucial free throw

    haha!
yea…it's all Green's fault. That guy!
I mean, at least he could've gotten mad and yelled or something. SMH.
