Celtics-Hornets Grades

Boston Celtics 86 FinalRecap | Box Score 87 New Orleans Hornets
Brandon Bass, PF 31 MIN | 5-8 FG | 1-1 FT | 6 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 11 PTS | +20We’ve come a long way folks. I’ll put it simply. Brandon Bass needed to play more tonight. The guy was a +20. In the first half, he played great on both ends and then Doc took him out from the 4:30 minute mark in 3rd quarter and didn’t bring him back until there were 5 minutes left in the 4th, when the C’s couldn’t buy a bucket over that entire stretch. Boston scored eight points over those 12 minutes he was out. They could have used more Bass. Doc needs to be smarter than that, and stay with Bass when he’s playing well. When’s he on, he’s a major weapon on offensive end.
Paul Pierce, SF 33 MIN | 9-17 FG | 8-8 FT | 2 REB | 5 AST | 1 STL | 2 BLK | 3 TO | 28 PTS | +12Almost stole the game for the C’s by himself, scoring 16 of Boston’s 33 points in the second half. Gets docked a grade for a lack of rebounding, but he can’t do it all every night. This shows you how much trouble C’s are in when he doesn’t hit glass. though New Orleans outrebounded C’s 30-12 in 2nd half.
Kevin Garnett, C 29 MIN | 9-16 FG | 2-2 FT | 6 REB | 3 AST | 3 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 20 PTS | -3Like his teammates, nice showing in first half, not so much after intermission. Showed his age upon failing to box out Anthony Davis for game-winning tip. Otherwise not a lot of rust from the Big Ticket. Encouraging to see injury isn’t bothering him too much.
Avery Bradley, PG 35 MIN | 2-10 FG | 1-2 FT | 5 REB | 4 AST | 5 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 5 PTS | +7Terrific game on the defensive end for the most part. The offense? Not so much. Was one of the only guys who maintained a high energy level for his entire time on floor. Team could have used more of that.
Courtney Lee, SG 37 MIN | 2-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 1 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 5 PTS | -3It’s not a good sign for Lee if you lead the team in playing time and I barely remember anything you did while out there. 0 rebounds and 1 assist in 37 minutes isn’t going to cut it.
Jeff Green, PF 27 MIN | 4-8 FG | 4-4 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 2 BLK | 1 TO | 13 PTS | -12If only he called it quits after the first quarter. Came out looking amazing and then it all went away. Was also particularly bad on the defensive end on a number of possessions, forcing Doc to go away from him for much of the 4th quarter.
Chris Wilcox, PF 6 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -7Doc isn’t trusting him anymore and his minutes are showing that. It’s only a matter of time before we see a bit of D.J. or Shavlik in this role if Wilcox isn’t bringing anything on the offensive end.
Jordan Crawford, SG 22 MIN | 2-5 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 4 PTS | -5Not crazy about the Jordan Crawford crunch time era, but Doc had little choice with the other guards doing next to nothing on the offensive end. Crawford actually was okay late, it was his three turnovers and ugly shoots earlier in the game that bother me.
Jason Terry, SG 20 MIN | 0-5 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 4 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 0 PTS | 0Didn’t take a shot in the first half, which was fine. When team needed him late, the JET couldn’t get off the runway. He’s really struggling on the road this year. Team needs more from him if they want to win tough road games like this.
Doc RiversNeeded to mix it up in the second half more, when C’s couldn’t buy a bucket for about 12 minutes. See Bass blurb.
  • High Rollers

Having read Doc's post-game comments, it seems like he got sick fast of the la-di-da attitude he saw after the C's got up. He too knows there's a thin line for this group between being great and being great at the Y. Likely the guys noted above who could have and should have helped with the scoring were sitting in time-out in the third and fourth (the kid's kind). Focus is everything. Otherwise it's just a tenuous grasp on reality. And bad grades on C-Hub.

Doc is of course a better coach than Spoelstra…and than about 50% of the league. But this team needs Greg Popovich….almost every team does, though. He has got Splitter, Green, Leonard, and the rest of "nobodies" playing as a team.

Boston has – STILL – an un-integrated, fractured, underachieving bunch with obvious weak links that other teams exploit at will.

    • High Rollers

All that, and we lost to Miami by two, after beating them a few weeks earlier in double-overtime. Cheer up, elroz. They ain't that lost. Just had a lot more to learn than Doc anticipated. I think he's up for the challenge.

    • Anthony

Before you go giving Pop too much credit and continue your rants on the Celts, let me remind you that the Spurs lost to the Blazers by 30 at home and a depleted TWolves by 24 on the road just last week.

All of us (except for a few trolls), want the Celts to show that proverbial "consistency" but these are real men and not machines who play the game. There are going to be up and downs. Bad games happens.

I will say in no particular order, IMO, the following coaches are better than Doc:

      – Pop
      – Thibs
      – Rick Carlisle
      – Rick Adelman
      – Kevin McHale
      – George Karl

I'd add Mark Jackson, Frank Vogel, and Lionel Hollins there, if nothing else, then for getting their teams to play hard all night every night. And yeah, I'd have to toss Erik Spoelstra up there too. How many coaches can win 23 games with the defending champs?

It's hard to say how good other coaches are in the league because of the talent disparity. For example, Mike Dunlap's Bobcats bring it every single game. The team looks like a mess, but how much of that is personnel versus coaching?

I'd remove Kevin McHale and George Karl, both of whose teams seem to follow awesome philosophy but don't seem to pass the eye test.

Thibs can coach the hell out of the regular season, but he wears his guys down with no regard for human life, and then the team is a shell of itself in the playoffs.

        • Anthony

This is a pretty good topic for discussion because Doc can't be the Celts' coach forever.

IMO, Mark Jackson shouldn't be on the list, Frank Vogel needs more on his resume, and Dunlap shouldn't even be mentioned. You coach with what you have and if you can't motivate your players, then technically you're not a good coach. McHale has done an admirable job in both Houston and Minnesota. George has a great resume and he developed the philosophy that was put in place in Milwaukee, Seattle, and Denver. I say that ranks him as one of the best. Thibs is more of the old school type coach and you can't fault him for DRose's injury. Lionel Hollins, I'm on the fence about because Memphis happens to be my favorite team in the West.

  • ghoulbuns

Bullshit loss. Seriously we have a chance to advance seeds and we just pissssss it away. Disgraceful.

  • Anthony

AB really has to learn to finish around the rim. He's getting to the point where he gets his shot blocked multiple times every game.

Is Wilcox the worse defensive player on this roster? For someone who has been on the team for 2 years, it's really unacceptable. KG can't even get a nice rest.

as long as we get into the playoffs i am not too disappointed with these awful losses. think secretly Doc is sabotaging these hornets/pelicans games to give his son a little confidence, far fetched i know, and just kidding btw (i hope).
but we have seen this before. the NBA playoffs are a whole new season, and as long as the remaining talent can get some reps, master the system and stay healthy, it really is anyones ball game come april. the east is wide open for the taking, and this team and this coach have what it takes to fight on the big stage.
btw i love the potential nate robinson effect of J. Crawford, and hopefully T Will and DJ of being able to surprise people and get momentum going in the right direction when the starters go cold.
    go green!

I really did not like what Doc did tonight. Some of this has already been stated, but here are my gripes: Bass was playing pretty well tonight, so why did he essentially sit an entire quarter in the second half? I don't ever want to say 22 minutes of Jordan Crawford again in my life. at one point the lineup was (not sure if I remember the guards right but i believe) bradley, terry, crawford, Pierce, KG. why was this ever on the court? and then the mess at the end. for the last offensive possession, we take a timeout, so I think that Doc is going to draw up a gem. instead? PP iso!! the second I saw the play start I knew it was coming, and I feel like i was the last to know. then on D we were just as bad. I don't know the guys name, but everyone knew the player on the hornets was going to attack the rim. The Celtics just sat there and watched the play develop. This one is less on Doc, but he needed to stress ball pressure. I think i have more to complain about, but I can't think of it right now….

I woke up and I see this stinker.. Really great start of a day. I mean 2 L with Hornets and 2 L with bobcats, really? at worst scenario it should be 3 W and 1 L so C's would be 3 games up in standings, but no, this team can't do it easy way..

  • hydrofluoric

IMO, I think it's a little unfair to dock Pierce's grade for the rebounding (though I'd have him at A- anyway). He took a really nasty shot/fall early in the second half that scared me. Was just happy to see him get up after that, much less score 10+ points to try to keep the C's afloat. I don't blame him for not mixing it up on the glass as effectively.

  • The Cardinal

Since they won't be the number 2 or 3 seed, I think the team is better off as the number 7. Sure, I'd prefer they beat the teams that they should and not lose so ugly, but they haven't consistently done this in years. For every outstanding performance against one of the league's elite, there always seem to be an equal amount of stinkers against the bottom tier teams, and no amount of wishing it were otherwise by Doc or by the fans is going to change it.
