Celtics-Bobcats Grades

Boston Celtics 74 FinalRecap | Box Score 100 Charlotte Bobcats
Jeff Green, PF 30 MIN | 4-11 FG | 6-8 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 14 PTS | -17
Inefficient offense, no rebounding and some pretty ugly defense as well. We’re reverting back to the first half of the season Jeff Green and I don’t think anyone wants to go back there.
Brandon Bass, PF 24 MIN | 4-6 FG | 2-2 FT | 7 REB | 2 AST | 2 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 10 PTS | -8
One of the only guys who actually showed up tonight. He continues to rebound well and is hitting shots on offense, but somehow only got six shots on a night without Pierce on the floor. If C’s are going to continue to rely on the mid-range, this is the guy I want taking those shots.
Kevin Garnett, C 21 MIN | 2-10 FG | 1-2 FT | 2 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 5 PTS | -16
I can’t give KG an F. I just can’t do it, even though he probably deserves it for this game. He’s tired, even if Doc says he’s not. Look for him to rest one of the next two games before Miami comes to town. This team needs to get him right again after a couple stinkers.
Avery Bradley, PG 28 MIN | 4-11 FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 10 PTS | -10
The corner 3’s were nice, but very little of the rest of his game was productive.
Courtney Lee, SG 29 MIN | 3-6 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 4 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 6 PTS | -21
Got into foul trouble, which helped allow Gerald Henderson to take off. Missed plenty of open 3-balls. Lackluster.
Shavlik Randolph, PF 18 MIN | 2-4 FG | 0-2 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 4 PTS | -7
I want to see some footage of him scoring 32 points per game in China. I just don’t believe it’s possible. Refs screwed him over a couple of times on calls, but by and large he’s not quick enough defensively to help this team.
D.J. White, PF 16 MIN | 1-4 FG | 1-2 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 3 PTS | -8
So much for showing a spark against your former team.
Chris Wilcox, PF 10 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -1
Fouled a lot, Doc didn’t go back to him in the second half. After a terrific couple weeks, it’s been a bad couple games for CW.
Jordan Crawford, SG 28 MIN | 4-6 FG | 5-5 FT | 1 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 14 PTS | -21
Had a nice second quarter which helped keep the C’s in the game. Doc probably should have gone to him earlier in the third quarter when the C’s couldn’t buy a bucket, but it was too late by that point probably anyway. Still fouls too much on defens.e
Terrence Williams, SG 14 MIN | 1-3 FG | 0-2 FT | 1 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 3 PTS | -11
Now I know why the Rockets and Nets gave up on him.
Jason Terry, SG 24 MIN | 2-5 FG | 1-2 FT | 1 REB | 4 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 5 PTS | -10
Terry’s been bad on the road all year, but this is exactly the kind of game Boston can’t afford him to lay an offensive egg in. If he can’t create his own shot against the Bobcats, who can he against?
If you ever questioned how important Pierce was to just about everything this team does, watch tonight’s game. I fear the post-Pierce era in Boston. It won’t be pretty.
Doc Rivers
At least he was smart enough to rest Paul.

One Thing We Saw

  1. This was brutal, but let’s keep it in perspective. The Celtics played nine of their last 11 on the road, and somehow managed to go 6-5 through that stretch. If they lose against the Raptors Wednesday night it’s time to worry, but the C’s haven’t had a stinker in about 20 games now. They were due. Unfortunately, it came against the Bobcats.
  • Anthony

    I like Pierce's grade.

    • CelticsBIG3

Tommy Heinsohn gave him the Tommy Award on CSNNE tonight too.

  • CelticsBIG3

Jason Terry has been regressing at a frightening rate. How many mistakes has he made in the last two games? He looks terrible out there lately.

    • Anthony

      It's not just JET though.

Not sure if there's any more to add here's a list of plays that's almost guaranteed to happen every game. If they can clean that up, they win. Plain and simple.

      – A lazy out of bounds pass for turnover
      – JET jumping before making a pass
      – CLee stepping on sideline or baseline going out of bounds
      – Wilcox fumbles a pass
      – Bass pump fakes no one instead of taking wide open shot
      – KG/ Pierce travels near the 3pt wing
      – KG moving screen

      • ElRoz

pretty right on all of these…but Bass pump fake against no one is a classic now – true but horrid cretinism – and they only have 3 coaches on the team – so nobody to correct him on this I guess?

        • Rav

That's a confidence thing, right? Seems like Bass has problems with his confidence on court all season, which is odd seeing as he had a decent season last year and just signed a new long-term contract. An effect of the emergence of Sullinger, perhaps?

        • janos

to my think 3 coach is more then enogh help him out

      • KillerGymRat

        You can add:

        – AB getting blocked on an easy layup.

        • Anthony

Hmm…not sure if that's a given every game, maybe every other game.

Now that the frustration over last nite's game subsided, there are also good things that happens every game.

          – JGreen highlight slam
          – AB steals at mid-court for easy layup
          – Pierce elbow jumper
          – KG top of the key jumper
          – JET with dagger 3pt
          – Wilcox easy layup/ putback/ slam/ alley oop

          Feel free to add.

  • NZNICK33

Thanks Boston for getting your asses kicked by the worst team in basketball on my birthday.
    Highly inconsiderate!

  • Eric

I was pleasantly surprised by Jordan Crawford, who played with energy in a game where energy (at least for the Celtics) was hard to find. I was impressed with the shots he *didn't* take, and I liked how he created for teammates, such as the pretty pass when Lee cut from the corner. I agree his defense isn't stellar, but he's putting in effort (apparently a new approach for him), and two fouls in 28 minutes seems reasonable. If he can play under control like this, his unpredictable herky-jerky game is a plus in a backup role.

  • ElRoz

Why did Doc not rest KG along with Pierce? Just seems like another half-wit half-move…either rest both and Terry..or don't rest them and go for a win.

Right now I'm ready to have them rest the last 3 games and just end up No. 8 in the East – at least they are going to be rested against Miami, instead of tired against NY or Indiana.

    • CG12

Doc pretty much did rest KG. KG clearly didn't have it, and played very little in the second half.

  • Rav

The poor grades are well deserved. One small gripe: Jeff Green, though 4-11 from the field, ended with a tally of 14 points on 11 shots, which isn't actually inefficient, per se. Crawford was good on the offensive side today; think the match result is dragging down his individual grade a bit.

    • CG12

Agreed. 14 points on 11 shots is very efficient. 4 for 11 isn't good, obviously, but if he happens to make one more, he goes 5-11 and no one would even mention his shooting percentage.

  • KillerGymRat

I think one big problem right now is minutes. Aside from KG and PP, who can be trusted with more then 30 minutes (at most). Green looked like he might really be breaking out after that 31 pt 5 blk game…but then he pulled an ostrich and stuck his head in the sand.

Kinda scary to see the team look this tired and out of sorts this late in the season. A game like this is where guys like TWill, JC, White and Randolph should all be playing at a playoff intensity trying to earn some minutes going forward.

I can take losing to the Bobcats…but not when it's due to no effort and they play like a JV squad.

    • janos

      hi rat
      is best aproch us rest star on couple game but win spot no miani on start round;

  • Kafel

OMG…. Really? After watching first half I though they will lose but 74 points? I didn't watch second half because I was afraid that my eyes could explode and boy I was right… That first half was just horrible, I mean there were sloppy plays and lack of effort in almost every possession. They were playing like they were AFRAID of BOBCATS!! worst club in NBA!! C'mon!!

  • wayne

How did Doc earn a "D"?

He even whiffed on sitting PP while keeping KG & JT (equally old birds) out there to stink up the joint tonight?

Doc should take his "F" right there with the likes of JT, T-Will, and DJ White.

  • AussieCeltic

Is it just me or would it make more sense to play all the guys against the Bobcats and Raptors to ensure wins, then rest them all against Miami? Surely the standings are the most important thing here. And the guys that need rest, can do so by missing the tiring Heat game.

    • CelticsBIG3

That sort of makes sense, but there are two reasons why it won't happen that way; 1. The Celtics are far too prideful to have their best guys ride the pine against Miami and another win against them builds confidence. 2. The crap David Stern gave the Spurs and Popovich for leaving his premiere players back in San Antonio versus the Heat back in November.

      • janos

        hi big3

        • CelticsBIG3

          Hey man

    • wayne

How about the possibility that the older vets "truly" are a little fatigued and worn out, and actually truly needed the rest RIGHT NOW….and would have loss to the Cats last night even if they would have ALL played as their bodies just wouldn't cooperated. I could see it all over JT last night. The guy looked like a whipped noodle out there trying to keep up with Henderson. It Just Wasn't Happening !

  • CLTCeltic

First saw the Celtics in CLT in early 1991 vs. the Hornets as a graduation gift from college (Dec '90). Hornets beat C's for the first time EVER with no Bird that night. Sucked! Took family to first Bobcats game ever in CLT because they were playing the C's. No Paul Pierce and a 26-point blowout against the hapless, 10-game losing streak, un-Jordan-like Bobcats? 74 points against a team who gave up an avg. of 109+ pts/gm? Doc should be ashamed. So should the rest of them. Terrence Williams, Shavlik Randolph, and D.J. "Bobcats Castoff" White. Who are these people? And I don't know if it's a good thing that we "won" free tix to CLT vs. TOR next week. GET IT TOGETHER, C'S!!

  • CG12

So that was bad. But not the end of the world. Nobody played that much. The new guys got some run in a real game. The thing that I disliked most was the overall lack of energy. They played slow and not aggressive. It is no wonder the offense regressed – they moved it up the floor slowly and took forever to get into the offense.

I think giving Green a D- is ridiculous. He was one of the few guys who actually did something last night. 14 points on 11 shots is excellent production. He got those points by pushing the ball up the floor and attacking, something that only Jordan Crawford also did. It wasn't a great defensive effort, but Green wasn't the one getting torched last night. I put a lot of the blame for the trouble the Cs have hard recently in controlling scoring guards on the bigs in their pick-and-roll coverage. Guys are able to turn the corner way too easily. Our guards need time to recover to their man, and the bigs aren't giving it to them.
