With two NBA games and his first made basket in the books, the Celtics announced yesterday that Fab Melo’s time in the big leagues is over for now. They have sent the rookie center back down to the Maine Red Claws. While it was fun to see the former Syracuse star get his first floor time of the season, just eight minutes of court time illustrated how much more work the big man has to do, especially on the defensive end, to compete for regular minutes on the NBA level.
With the C’s having just three more games until the All-Star Break, getting Melo back to Portland for some additional floor time after giving him a nice taste of the big league is the best move for all parties. Fab got rewarded for a job well done in the first half of the season in the D-League with a couple in-game appearences and Doc Rivers made C’s fans happy by giving the center some run. Rivers also doesn’t have to worry about ridiculous fans calling on the team to play Melo more. Not now anyway.
