Celtics-Nets Grades

Boston Celtics 97 FinalRecap | Box Score 102 Brooklyn Nets
Kevin Garnett, PF 30 MIN | 6-12 FG | 2-2 FT | 7 REB | 0 AST | 14 PTS | -12Did an admirable job providing some offense in the first half of the fourth quarter, before C’s went cold from the field. Played the entire fourth quarter again after just 18 minutes over the first 3. Like the minutes management by Doc, but do wonder if KG’s tired legs are coming back to burn Boston late.
Brandon Bass, PF 30 MIN | 4-14 FG | 0-1 FT | 5 REB | 0 AST | 8 PTS | -23The mid-range jumper vanished when the C’s needed it most late in the game. Like the rest of his teammates, did a nice job bouncing back on the defensive glass after a atrocious first half.
Paul Pierce, SF 34 MIN | 8-12 FG | 4-6 FT | 7 REB | 4 AST | 22 PTS | +2Not going to let two missed free throws and a questionable dumb foul (you can make case, fouling wasn’t the worst move there) destroy his grade too much. Showed off some impressive moves from mid-range to get Boston back into the game in the fourth quarter and did a strong job containing Joe Johnson for the majority of the night.
Jason Terry, SG 28 MIN | 3-7 FG | 2-4 FT | 4 REB | 6 AST | 10 PTS | +3Wasn’t able to bail out the C’s with his offense late, like he did in the Chicago win Monday night. Anytime you get four rebounds and six assists from the veteran guard, you can’t be too disappointed.
Leandro Barbosa, SG 30 MIN | 5-11 FG | 6-6 FT | 2 REB | 2 AST | 17 PTS | -8Some ineffective defense in the first half was his only real downfall here, as he filled in quite admirably for Rajon Rondo for the second straight night. The offense dried up when he hit the bench for the majority of the fourth quarter, which makes you wonder if Doc should have turned back to Mr. Instant offense a little sooner, after the Nets struggled to contain him all night going to the basket.
Jeff Green, PF 25 MIN | 2-6 FG | 0-0 FT | 6 REB | 1 AST | 5 PTS | +1A step back on the offensive end, but a strong effort on the glass helped a ton in the second half. His ability to continue contributing in other facets of the game when his shots isn’t going will be huge for this team going forever.
Jared Sullinger, PF 8 MIN | 0-1 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 0 PTS | 0No real impact here. Watching him try to fight Reggie Evans for position on the glass was entertaining.
Chris Wilcox, PF 13 MIN | 2-2 FG | 2-2 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 6 PTS | +16Couldn’t real find a way to contain Brook Lopez who ran a layup and rebounding drill on him for much of the first half. Still, he maximized his minutes on the offensive end
Jason Collins, C 8 MIN | 1-2 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 2 PTS | -1Oh Darko, when you have fallen behind Jason Collins in the rotation, you know it’s trouble. Beyond a missed layup, Jason didn’t do anything to embarrass himself here. It would be nice if he could rebound a little more, but he helped stabilize the defense in the second quarter with KG resting.
Courtney Lee, SG 33 MIN | 4-8 FG | 4-4 FT | 9 REB | 3 AST | 13 PTS | -3Now this is the guy we have been looking for all season. The three-guard rotation with Rondo sidelined probably helped Lee find his rhythm, but he was everywhere for the C’s on both ends, especially in the second half and finished with a team-high nine rebounds. Three assists, and three steals as well and a nice job shutting down Deron Williams in the second half. Sign me up for more!

4 points from Jason Terry is what you expect? I hope your joking there.

  • Wtich16

I think its more the 6 assists that he was happy about

  • ghoulbuns

Did Terry finish with 10 or 4 points? I know theres a typo in there somewhere…but I too am struggling to discern what you mean by your expectations of Terry.

This game was on Doc. Doc lost the game by poor subbing in the 4th. Where was Barbosa? He was on fire all night and Doc had Lee out there too long in the 4th. Barbosa finally comes in with a few minutes to spare and we started making a comeback. Sorry, but if Barbosa would of came in earlier in the 4th with 5 mins left, we may be looking at a win. And please Doc, bench the next person who doesn't box out his opponent regardless of who it is.

Hope Bass matures enough to understand when his shot is not falling he needs to adjust his game. It was brutal watching him continue to put up open jumpers when he was smacking the back of the iron and not close to making any of them. Hopefully he can learn from Pierce to attack the rim so he can create easier shots or get to the line to find his rhythm.

Overall, I felt like the C's lost focus on offense after they got the 5 pt lead. The shot selection was terrible with lots of hero ball and way too many mental errors. A few bad calls from the refs didn't help either. But still it was a game they should have won. Considering there was no Rondo or Bradley, and the D and rebounding in the second half looked the best it has all year, at least there are some good things to build on going forward. The ineffectiveness of all the bigs (save for Garnett) sadly is not one of them.

  • High Rollers

Yep. By the end of the night Lee and Blur had done their best Rondo impressions to date… one with his aggressive O and the other becoming a freak on the boards. Find a way to play D for more than one half of basketball and we're golden. And it looked to me like Jeff was making quite a few mistakes in the fourth, leading to us coughing up the small lead we worked so hard for. But maybe my eyes deceived me; maybe everybody had the shanks. With Rondo out for the first time this season, that's probably the case and I should be too hard on Jeff. He just wears that lost look all too well. Fake it 'til you make it, Mr. Green!

Keep this in mind. We would've had this game last night with Rondo playing and a healthy Bradley? We're gonna be just fine in come February.

      hi james patrick

  • CG12

Jason Collins is okay as a third string center, but man is he crappy. He works hard and plays okay defense, but has no talent except being tall. And that's fine.

KG was going as hard as ever last night, but I thought he had a pretty poor game. He got owned in the paint on both ends of the floor. His post game has looked way off this year.

  • WTF

We lost because of Doc: not playing Barbosa more and put a tired Pierce on Johnson. That killed C's offense and gave Johnson multiple chances to score. Green should be on Johnson in those situations.

    • tbunny

OK, I think maybe Doc benched Barbosa because Barbosa flubbed the last possession of the third quarter by starting the play way too late, and Doc was screaming at him to start the play. So maybe Doc was a little peeved at Barbosa.

Also, in Doc's defense, Johnson was garbage for most of the game.

Green looked pretty good for a stretch in the first half where he was going to the hole then stopped. No Barbosa late was a problem. Surprised a little bit that Darko has fallen off the rotation so much. I don't think Jason Collins did much to assert himself though, so the window isn't closed for Darko
