Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports has a source telling him that the Celtics are in the final stages of a multi-year deal with Mavericks shooting guard Jason Terry. The deal is likely for the full mid-level exception. (UPDATE: Spears confirms this.)
This doesn’t mean that Ray Allen isn’t coming back: as Spears noted yesterday, Doc is interested in signing both Terry and Allen. But that would leave the Celtics three-deep at shooting guard, with Avery Bradley likely to start and Terry and Allen overlapping somewhat with their skills off the bench.
Either way, this is exciting. Terry’s a divisive player, but his energy and competitiveness would be a nice fit in the Celtics locker room. He’s also a pretty decent consolation prize if the Celtics lose Allen: he’s two years younger, and wouldn’t hesitate to be a microwave off the bench, his role in Dallas for the last several years. He’s not the three-point shooter that Ray is (nobody is), but he might see his shooting percentages rise with a decline in usage in Boston…and having Rajon Rondo at point guard has never hurt anybody’s efficiency.
