Spears: Celtics Finalizing Deal with Jason Terry

Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports has a source telling him that the Celtics are in the final stages of a multi-year deal with Mavericks shooting guard Jason Terry. The deal is likely for the full mid-level exception. (UPDATE: Spears confirms this.)

This doesn’t mean that Ray Allen isn’t coming back: as Spears noted yesterday, Doc is interested in signing both Terry and Allen. But that would leave the Celtics three-deep at shooting guard, with Avery Bradley likely to start and Terry and Allen overlapping somewhat with their skills off the bench.

Either way, this is exciting. Terry’s a divisive player, but his energy and competitiveness would be a nice fit in the Celtics locker room. He’s also a pretty decent consolation prize if the Celtics lose Allen: he’s two years younger, and wouldn’t hesitate to be a microwave off the bench, his role in Dallas for the last several years. He’s not the three-point shooter that Ray is (nobody is), but he might see his shooting percentages rise with a decline in usage in Boston…and having Rajon Rondo at point guard has never hurt anybody’s efficiency.

  • Brian

Great Job by Danny if he can close a deal with Jet Terry. Ray isn't all in on being a Celtic anymore and it was time for him to move on.

  • I_Love_Green

Would love this signing. JET is a big time player, and he adds a scoring option off the bench. He can handle the ball as well too, so if we do get Ray back Terry would most likely be the ball handler off the bench.

  • Luke Walton

anyone want to handicap the chances of pierce getting dealt?

    • Pauper

Zero. Fans would be up in arms, few takers for his contract considering the decline in his game last year, and we can't bank on JG after surgery so need a SF for him. There are no older comparable SFs and why would you trade a younger comparable SF for PP?

  • Patrick G

I would love this trade. Even if Ray comes back, I don't believe he will. We need bench scoring & The Jet is the definition of bench scoring. He can play the point too, but the combo of Rondo, Bradley and Terry is too nasty too pass up. If Ray came back, they would just play him at SF, having a small lineup. I feel like Danny and Doc have a solid read on the team & they wouldn't be doing this deal if they really felt like Jesus Shuttlesworth was staying. Now on to signing Jeff Green, a PG (Dooling? I'm in), and Bass or another starting PF. KG will be playing C this season…I don't see that changing unless the C's get a starting C. I think it will be easier to get a PF in free agency this season over a C. Doc isn't putting The Steamer into the starting lineup. Not until he proves himself to be consistent & healthy. Fab Melo won't be starting, kid doesn't have a chance – but that isn't what he needs anyways, he needs to learn in the D-League and with KG through practices. Bass wants starter money & the C's can't give it to HIM. They could split the money he might want (8-6 mill) and put it towards Marcus Camby at backup C for 20 mpg, and PF – player X. Jeff Green isn't moving to the PF spot. I don't see Doc making that mistake. It didn't work in OKC and it won't work now. Ray isn't the biggest concern…a PF that can start is (sorry Wilcox)

    • Ben

      It's not a trade.

  • Luke Walton

alternatively, might Avery be dangled for a vet impact player?

    • Pauper

You beat me to the punch while I was still typing. Agree and pray it ain't so. Bradley is extremely young and freakishly athletic. The guy was ranked higher than John Wall before they entered for their one year of college.

  • Luke Walton

I smell a trade coming if we land JT and RA.

I don't know who's leaving, but I say we land a power player of some note.

  • Pauper

Ray can't play SF. The most likely scenario with this signing is Ray is leaving. You have too much money and playing time tied up at the SG position if he stays. I think either Ray is gone or shockingly we're going to package Bradley in a deal for a center.

    • Ben

Terry could play backup PG, but I agree I'd rather have Terry than Ray at this point.

  • Luke Walton

si, dealing Avery might well happen.

We are perilously close to "the other shoe" time in celticdom

  • Luke Walton

    Jesus can't play the 3 . . . unless we're going small.

JT, RA, and PP all on t he court at the same time.

Substitute Avery for Rondo, throw KG out at the 5, and all of a sudden, you have a variation of doc's favorite lineup — KG and t he four guns!

  • Pauper

If we can keep them all the only team we could lose to would be the Lakers with Bynun/Howard with Gasol and MWP.

    • Mike

Who exactly do you expect the Lakers to trade to get Howard?

      • Pauper

Bynum which is why I have Bynum or Howard + Gasol + Indiana Ron.

  • Luke Walton

    question:

Would you trade avery for pau, in a sign and trade where we throw in something else to make the salaries work?

  • Phil

Really like the move. The defense will be fine as long as KG is here, the real problem for the Celtics the last few years has been crippling offensive droughts. Someone like Terry; a good and fearless scorer off the bench is the perfect player to help with that.

I'm not ready to write Allen off the roster yet like most people, because I do think you can give Terry, Allen and Bradley minutes on the same team in an NBA that's getting smaller and less dependent on position structure, but it would soften the blow if he does leave. 11m would be a lot to pay a two headed SG spot, but that would give the Celtics fire power that they just haven't had. When you factor in that they really can't use the 6m for Ray on a comparable player, its a no brainer to bring him back if possible.

  • Patrick G

I wouldn't trade avery, and I also don't want to land Pau in any scenario. He's a decent PF/C, but he won't play defense, and that's where the C's really need help – inside defense. Josh Smith would be a much better fit (keeping KG at C)

    • Pauper

Was thinking the same thing but don't see AB+picks getting Josh Smith and Atlanta has much less need to move JS now that they found a sucker to take JJ's idiotic contract.

      • Luke Walton

        hmmm

        brandon and ab for JS?

        • Phil

I can't even see Atlanta wanting Bass for nothing at this point. They're obviously clearing cap room to make a run at an actual star. Filling that space up with multiple years of Brandon Bass at 7m+ puts them in a terrible position.

Bradley and picks alone might be more enticing, though you'd have to find some expiring contracts somewhere (third team maybe?) I haven't heard anything about what the Hawks want in return for Smith, so its all speculation though. I don't like the idea of trading Bradley, but Smith would be a very appealing piece for the Celtics.

    • Ben

I hate Josh Smith. He just makes stupid decisions with the basketball that make him look like a bonehead despite his talent. No desire to see him in a boston Uni unless it was at a discounted price.

  • CelticsBIG3

They are not trading avery bradley. I absolutely do not see that happening. At least I absolutely hope I don't see that happening.

  • Geoffrey R.

I think the Celtics should give Ray Allen the starting job back and bring Avery Bradley off the bench, and then all could be well. It seems everybody thinks it's a foregone conclusion that Avery Bradley should start, but if it means keeping Ray Allen, they should honor him and give him back his job in the starting lineup. That to me is the answer to all these issues, and I don't think Avery Bradley would have any problems coming off the bench, and starting when Ray Allen or Rajon Rondo is out, which will happen because injuries happen. That's the logical solution, because there's no way you can bring both Ray Allen and Jason Terry off the bench. Hopefully Danny Ainge and Doc are being flexible in their assessment of this team, and not stuck on the idea that Avery Bradley must start.

    • Luke Walton

Yeah, RA and JT would be an interesting duo for doc to figure out.

I believe, however, the first quarter numbers are much better for the Cs with AB in the starting lineup.

What I d on't remember is whether the first quarter deficits with RA starting were later overcome.

  • Luke Walton

    Yeah, probably not.

Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Avery Bradley?

    Which one doesn't fit?

    : )

    • Pauper

AB has to be dealt with picks or sign a trade Bass or all three to get someone good. Just my opinion but I think AB can be an absolute stud this year. If he improves on the ball handling and increases his range another 3-4 feet I don't know why he couldn't look a lot like DWade.

  • Luke Walton

    Maybe AB doesn't get dealt.

But since we all know Danny pretty well by now, something is gonna happen trade-wise.

Brandon Bass and someone else for a better PF?

  • Pauper

Completely forgot about BB who is worth something in a sign and trade. AB+Bass can probably get you a rebounding big man. I like Bass and appreciate everything he did this year but we can't pay him a starter's wage just like we couldn't for Big Baby. Sullinger also has as good a mid range game as Bass and with much better post offense which we need since KG can only play down there sparingly.

    • Luke Walton

that is sounding like realistic ainge trade bait

  • Patrick G

I wouldn't want to keep a diva that demanded to be kept in the starting lineup. When healthy, the numbers prove AB is a better starter for the Celtics. That doesn't say Jesus isn't getting more or equal minutes, OR that he's finishing the games…that should be more important to him. That and a ring.

  • Patrick G

Word is Terry is taking the Celtics offer back to Mark Cuban to see what the Mavs will offer…this isn't good for the C's

    • Luke Walton

      booo

    • Pauper

It's not but not clear the Mavs want an older SG since they can't win if Deron stays with the Nets so might as well save the money and hope for better draft picks.

      • Luke Walton

        More than MLE for JT?

        Seems a stretch.

    • Phil

That struck me as respect more than anything else. The Mavs won't match that when everything they're doing is centered around landing a huge free agent.

      • Pauper

It's how they lost Chandler which probably would have given them only one more round this past year anyway. Mavs are in a much steep decline than the Celtics core so spending on Jet isn't going to save them. On the other hand, the Cs become top 2-3 with what Danny is doing.

  • Pauper

I hope Jesus stays as well. I'm sure he's hurt playing behind Bradley but he should realize playing elsewhere will ruin his legacy and if he goes to Miami and loses to us next year, it will be an even worse outcome than he could have ever imagined. With what Danny is doing here I think it's 50/50 we lose to Miami with Ray.

  • GreenM&M

    Doesn't Terry make Ray superfluous?
Also if we sign both will we have any money to sign Green, Bass or another big?

  • ElRoz

The news post went up 47 minutes ago – and there are already 34 comments? Wow – now that's Celtics fans!

    • Luke Walton

      Last offseason SUCKED.

      We didn't improve.

We Celtics fans can feel Ainge gearing up for a title run.

The moves today are precursor moves to something bigger.

      • High Rollers

Having a healthy KG come back for just a little over ten million for next season does wonders for the wheeler and dealer Danny Ainge. Big Ticket must be feeling good, must feel like it's absolutely winning time.

  • ElRoz

Ray of course is a great 3-point shooter. But Terry can handle the ball and can penetrate the lane. If they sign Terry and Ray (doubt it) – does that mean that Dooling is gone? Terry would shift to being a point-guard/shooting guard next to Ray Allen? But Dooling has provided good defense that neither of these guys would match. In any case, Terry is an upgrade over Ray in terms of ball-handling and penetration, but not shooting – how can you upgrade on Ray in shooting?

A back court of Terry and Dooling or one of Terry and Allen is good either way. But Terry-Allen is an offensive upgrade for sure. In fact Terry and Dooling is not bad since Terry has the 6th man offensive boost mentality that would play nice off the bench. But I think if Terry and Allen are both signed (doubt it), Dooling might be let go – sadly. He played good D and has a Celtic-Doc mentality.

  • Patrick G

They couldn't afford dooling if Ray & Terry came back. I'm fine with that, but I would still want a better ball handler than terry/moore on the roster. That's not enough ball handling security if Rondo goes down. That leaves basically all SG's to fill the PG spot. Any ideas of PF's? I don't see Bass coming back. I like him, but I don't love him. I followed him quite a bit in Orlando and he still is playing the same. 1 in 8 games, he goes off & looks like an all-star, but he is mostly a 8ppg, 5 reb kind of guy in 30 mins. He just not good enough to attract the PGs attention to pass to him. He's a black hole with the ball anyways.

    • Luke Walton

I don't have a good grasp of all the PFs in the league. I'd be happy with a rebounding/defensive stalwart.

We need to improve on the glass before we talk title.

JS is 26, and averaged a career high 9.6 caroms in 35 MPGs

  • ElRoz

Well, is Dooling a better ball-handler than Terry? I watched Dallas games last two seasons – not many, but about 10 games each season – and saw Terry handle the ball, bring up the ball, pass, etc. He actually has better one on one penetration skills – and crossover than Dooling or Ray.

If they don't sign Bass, I'd love to get Mr. Double-Double Kris Humphries. …but with all these signings, I might be dreaming. Wilcox or something liek that is also needed as a back-up center/PF.

  • Pauper

Sadly Dooling needs to go if we keep Ray and Bradley. I worry more about the SF position. If Green is really healthy we are fine but if not, PP alone isn't getting it done. As great as all these players and pieces are on paper, we couldn't get it done last year because PP wasn't himself and with no one to create his own shot, Ray, KG, and Rondo suffer offensively. JT's penetration does help with that but let's not kid ourselves, at 35 you can see his game declined this past year vs. his championship playoff performance.

  • Luke Walton

An energized, re-invigorated JS in green.

This is my BIG thought for the next couple of weeks.

  • john

i'm sorry this means Ray is gone!

There is no way Ray and Jet are going be happy playing only 15 minutes a game.

  • skeeds

If Ainge pulls a strong move on the frontcourt, in addition to Terry, we'll be in pretty great shape.
JSmoove is the dream. And it's not too unlikely. No one has a clue what the hell the Hawks are trying to do, maybe we can take advantage of that.
The Lakers are trying to grab DH12. THere's a potential for a lopsided trade there, as they need all the cap relief they can get. We might land Gasol for Bass & pieces.
Let's just hope Marcus Camby isn't our plan A when it comes to big guys…

  • Anthony

Everyone seem pretty excited about the possibility of having Jet on the team but I'm still a little unsure about it since he's undersize at 6'2", turning 35 when the season begins, and it's a 3yr contract. If he was younger, I can live with his size because he's fairly athletic.

All hypothetical but can Jet be traded once he signs with the Celts? Maybe to ATL where he started his career. Wonder if Danny Ferry is looking to shed JSmooth or Horford's contracts. I would love to have either on the Celts.

Just 3 days into free agency and already so many twist and turns and what ifs.

  • Luke Walton

    oooooh

    horford

    now we're talkin!

    • Anthony

Too bad nobody know what Danny Ferry's plans are.

      Horford over JSmooth?

  • Luke Walton

JS maybe if totally motivated. Otherwise, Horford.

Maybe DF in 2012 can play the role of KMcHale in 2007.

    : )

    • Luke Walton

      Good heavens

      KG
      horford or JS
      rondo
      pierce

If AB goes in a trade, that makes JT/RA to two-guard combo with Jeff Green filling in . . . wherever

      Yikes!

Sounds like JT is coming to the Celtics, and I want the Celtics to pursue Ray Allen, but there is no way he will start over Bradley. We all want Ray, and the only way he is coming back is if he is starting. He is not starting on the Knicks, Heat, or Clippers. He should be happy coming off the bench. If they resign Allen/Dooling, and get JT, Doc should feel comfortable with any backcourt matchup

  • High Rollers

    Win-win.

  • Luke Walton

Seems like we'll need a posey like defender coming off the bench.

Mickael Pietrus isn't bad. If you re-sign him, that really might mean that ray is gone. JG, JT, and MP would be enough.

    Maybe you start AB.

But if you package AB for a big and go with JG, JT, and MP instead of RA, who starts at the 2?

    • Pauper

MP plays the 3, RA and JT play the 2. You really can't figure out the lineup until we either keep BB or sign and trade him since Doc probably keeps him starting so JG can play with the second unit backing up PP. If we lose JG then it depends on who we get but if could be RR,AB,PP,JG, and KG.

  • dwillis

It’s funny that the people worried about JT’s game declining aren’t worried about KG declining. They’re both old, it happens.

  • Morheus

I don’t want to trade Avery, he andRondo could be an elite(yes elite) backcourt in the very near future. I just don’t see how Ray, Jet,AB backcourt would work minutes wise, someone’s going to be dogged in that area.

I love Terry, he would be a dream come true to our bench.
