Raze The Atlantic: Celtics 102 Magic 98

Orlando Magic 98 Final
Recap | Box Score
102 Boston Celtics
Paul Pierce, SF 35 MIN | 9-14 FG | 11-12 FT | 5 REB | 14 AST | 29 PTS | +7

With Rondo out, Pierce combined a career high in assists with otherwordly scoring efficiency (29 points on 14 shots). He also iced the game with a late jumper and some clutch free throws. You probably think I’m stingy for not giving him the A+, don’t you?

Brandon Bass, PF 37 MIN | 7-11 FG | 7-8 FT | 2 REB | 3 AST | 21 PTS | +2

Points Yes, Boards No: The Brandon Bass Story.

Kevin Garnett, PF 34 MIN | 6-15 FG | 3-4 FT | 9 REB | 1 AST | 15 PTS | -12

He’s overworked lately, playing longer minutes (32.5) in April than any month previous. His shooting’s taken a hit: he’s down to 46% from the field this month, his lowest single-month shooting percentage of the season. Still, he continues to anchor everything. We don’t need to see him again until the playoffs. Right, Doc?

Sasha Pavlovic, SF 24 MIN | 0-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 0 AST | 0 PTS | -8

The Pavlovic and Dooling lines are again eerily similar in their emptiness.

Avery Bradley, SG 36 MIN | 10-14 FG | 2-3 FT | 1 REB | 1 AST | 23 PTS | -1

Is it possible Bradley is actually a great – not good – shooter, something obscured by his horrific start to the season? A career-high in points tonight, by the way.

Keyon Dooling, PG 23 MIN | 1-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 3 PTS | +10

More playing time should increase his production but he remains a non-factor on offense too often, and again tonight.

Marquis Daniels, SG 13 MIN | 2-4 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 2 AST | 4 PTS | -3

It’s curious how he’s still deeper in the rotation than his ability dictates.

Greg Stiemsma, C 24 MIN | 1-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 5 REB | 1 AST | 2 PTS | +16

Earlier in the season, I had almost exclusively negative things to say about Stiemsma, even when it was gentle negativity. Now, he changes the complexion of the game in the paint and as his reputation as a shotblocker grows, that’ll only become more of an intimidating factor against dribble penetration.

E’Twaun Moore, G 13 MIN | 2-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 1 AST | 5 PTS | +9

In January, I was unimpressed with Avery Bradley. In February and March, I was unimpressed with Greg Stiemsma. Given how those player development arcs have turned out, I am pleased to note how unimpressed I am with E’Twaun Moore in April.

Oh, c'mon! Paul even grabbed more boards and got an assist career high, so you could give him an A+, just for you!

  • Webster

If Bradley in the corner is a serious weapon, that Celtics starting lineup could be deadly against both Miami (Wade loves to drift) and Chicago (Bradley on Rose–I just worry about rebounding). Let alone the fact that Bradley is scoring with volume and efficiency while still, I think, having a lot of room to improvement in finishing drives. My big concern right now is that Rondo seems to be struggling with off-ball defense; he is great at playing the passing lanes but I think that he is gambling off shooters too much.

    • CG12

Rondo has been playing poor team defense for years now – not containing his man, going for the poke steal instead; not trying to get back to his man after he gets picked off; cheating off his man off the ball; etc., etc. I can't tell you the last time I actually saw Rajon in a real defensive stance. I just don't get it. If he gets any votes for All Defense, it will be a joke.

  • aiman

i agree! the truth should get an A+ for this game.

  • janos

    Hi Ryan, is Janos

    Tonight, even pierce was rondos.

    A+++++++++++++

Whats it take to get a D? Dooling & Sasha just did too much?

  • ElRoz

Dooling and Sasha don't do much on offense…but they play good defense, that's for sure.

Well, so shall we give KG, Pierce, Bass, and Bradley some rest? (the latter two not for rest but to avoid any ^&^%*^* in the last 3 games)

Baby had 27 points, I believe. He played well. Anybody regret the Bass-Baby trade right now?

    ………nobody? Me neither :)

    • red

BBD does. Also if he was on the team AB would have never had the chance to develop his offensive game.

      • CelticsBIG3

I don't know that that is nescessarily true about AB

  • tbunny

Remember how, oh about three months ago, people were talking about how Pierce's legs were finished? And I said, you don't know that he's done, the Truth can come back at any time?

Guess it's a good thing we didn't trade him.

  • CG12

I especially loved PP hitting the key bucket in Baby's mug. You have anything to say now, Glen? didn't think so.

    • Anthony

As soon as the shot went up, everybody knew it was going in. Vintage Pierce.

About the only thing I didn't like is that it had to come down to that shot. The Celts should've put ORL away early so KG and Pierce can get some rest.

I was a little surprise AB didn't end up with 30+ points. He was successful with all his scoring options… the backcut, the elbow jumpshot, the corner 3. My favorite was on a backcut from a Pierce assist. It looked like he was going to lay it up but last second decides to throw it down.

  • CG12

The first team's pick-and-roll defense has been an issue the last two games. Both Chandler and Baby put up big nights with nothing but open lay-ups and dunks. We didn't see any of the patented Big Baby 18-footers that drove Cs fans insane in recent years. I've always said Baby is best when he is on the move – it allows him to use his assets (agility, touch, girthiness) and avoid his liabilities (short, short-armed, not a leaper), which come into play far more when he is standing still.

  • OKCeltic

Ryan – I think you're being a little tough on E. You can't compare the development arcs of him and the Steimer. They're apples and oranges. E has had very little opportunity to show what he can do considering the lack of practice time and AB's emergence. If it weren't for the injuries to JO and Wilcox, Stiemsma's probably in the same boat, i.e. stuck at the end of the bench.

  • red's army

    dooling needs to get fired

  • carlos clark

i thought moore looked great, u obviously have a problem seeing talent…at one point he hit a pretty big 3 in the 4th….all moore is missing is confidence, and cant get that without playing time – does the whole avery bradely story ring a bell?

  • Rolltide3332

I dont think Stiemsma got enough credit for his shotblocking and for just keeping his cool over the continuous blatant abuse from referees continually. When is it going to end.
