Exciting Yet Puzzling Rumor: David West Sign-and-Trade with Celtics for Jermaine O’Neal

David Aldridge of Turner Network Television is reporting that one D. West is “close to a deal with” the Celtics, but not the one you might have expected.

Very exciting because, if his knee’s okay, David West gives the team a major offensive weapon at power forward. But also puzzling because…they just signed Brandon Bass today, and they already have Kevin Garnett. So they’re three-deep with stretch fours, if this goes through.

Woj is tweetporting that the deal would be for $27-29 million over three years, with West taking less money because he’s “desperately” wanted to play for a winner. Love this guy already. The deal would require trading Jermaine O’Neal and “one other player.” O’Neal reportedly wants to be waived by the Hornets so he could sign with the Heat. Always hated that guy.

Maybe either Bass, West, or Garnett would be expected to start at center? Or if it’s Chris Wilcox, maybe Bass is the backup 5? Or…is Rondo, Green, and Bass a trade package for a bigger star?

  • ripsonics

this is the weirdest week of my life. This is a great trade… but honestly, it has to be for something else! how long will brandon bass be here? and why didnt we make that sign and trade for that guy with the funny nose in phx if we were about to go shop for dwest?

I have no idea whats going on anymore. my head hurts.

    • dslack

      Lose one DWest, gain another.

      • ripsonics

is it confirmed that we lost west? Or are you just saying that

        • los

the dooling signing basically says it all

  • Kricky

Maybe they need JO's corpse to send to LA to make that CP3 trade work? That way LA has to take on the burden of JO's contract. Sending West would only make the trade look too lopsided in LA's favor.

  • Jack

if this is true JO for david west then this is an unbelievable trade.

  • Zee

    Awesome!

  • hdavenport

Any guesses on the "one other player"?

    • SK35

Avery Bradley was one rumor I heard. Definitely a rumor but would make the trade look a little more legit since Bradley has "upside" and it's all downhill with J. O'Neal.

    • Mike

      Bradley.

  • Samson

Keep hearing it's Bradley going with JO

    • hdavenport

Almost definitely him or one of the rookies.

      • Mike

JJJ has no space to play you're right.

  • LStrike

    KG on the move?

  • hdavenport

How does this happen at 11:00 PM on a Friday night?

    • SK35

Camp start date + free agent signing start date = no sleep for GMs. :)

  • http://twitter.com/KWAPT @KWAPT

I'm thinking it has to be Avery Bradley. As far as I'm concerned, Bradley's been gone since Dooling was signed. Ainge/Doc just waiting for the right deal to include him in. WHAT….A….DAY.

    • http://twitter.com/blakakala @blakakala

I´ll trade Dooling and JO for West!

  • Batman

    I’m so confused and excited

  • hdavenport

    Chris Paul on David West:

"That's like a brother to me," Paul said. "I've never played a season without him."

    • http://twitter.com/xtomchaptersx Tom W

We are going to see a Derrick Rose-esque year from CP if West is really gone. Nobody else on that team can score…he's going to have to average 30 points a game just to keep things competitive. (and even that might not do it)

  • skeeds

Ripsonics I'm with you. My head hurts. There's a gazillion possible things happening right now. I hope the most reasonable thing happens, which is we trade Green and maybe a rookie for a quality big someone is trying to get rid of. (hint, TURIAF) Having lived in Aingeville for a couple of days now though, it's equally possible that right now, he is devising a trade sending Bass disguised as KG, Rondo, Green, a 2064 1st round pick and Flo Allen to Otis Smith for Dwight Howard.

Then again, it's possible that over the long time he had to sit around and think, Doc actually devised a system where there's no need for centers, just double the amount of 4s a team would need…

    • ripsonics

haha.. we cant give up FLO! But honestly..DA is very smart. He is up to something. And i would not be surprised if there were something. I refuse to type the trade I am speculating because i do not want to jinx it. So i won't. But like i said earlier. DA aint done. If we send Rondo for DH.. who plays the point? I already think Rondo is the perfect PG for DH.. GAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH Whats happening.

Now… if we send someone for Deandre Jordan..? I would honestly be ok with that. Or maybe another freakishly athletic 'finishing' center. Who knows what is happening here.. No one. Start the season already so this madness can end.

      • http://twitter.com/michaeljavid @michaeljavid

I could handle a few more days of this. It's a rush of terror and excitement that I haven't felt since last year

  • hdavenport

    INSANE WHAT IF:

Ainge is trying to turn Rondo, Bass, and Green into a package to beat the Odom, Scola, Martin one. It's already younger and cheaper, closer to what NO is looking for. Maybe he's thinking of flipping Rondo to Indiana so they'd send Collison and another big piece to NO.

Of course, the league letting that trade through after what happened yesterday would potentially cause…problems.

    • Mike

It would be better if they were doing that to get Howard now. Would fit like a glove, while everyone is looking at cp3.

    • skeeds

I've been wondering about that too… It does look like a very strong package. But I think Stern screwed this up so badly, he leaves himself no choice but to either accept a modified version of the trade he stopped, or trade CP3 to a small team with a respectable offer.

If the owners were indeed outraged by the advantage this gave to a big market like the Lakers, they're not gonna be much happier for the Celtics, Boston isn't what one might consider a small market team…

      • dslack

Celtics still have no centers if they somehow flip Rondo, Bass, Green for CP3.

  • Ryan DeGama

    SECOND INSANE WHAT IF

KG, firsts, Rondo for D12 and Turkoglu.

    • Jack

no way we make that trade. cant send out KG and plus i really dont want to take on Hedo

      • hdavenport

I agree that trading KG would be messy, but…Hedo Turkoglu's contract is a dealbreaker for you even if it would get Dwight Howard to Boston?

        • skeeds

It wouldn't just be messy, it would be unreasonable for Orlando. Think about it. Orlando can get pretty much ANYTHING they want for Howard. Why on earth would they aim for KG's expiring contract?

          • Ryan DeGama

They can't get anything they want. Teams are not going to give up a ton unless there's a decent chance Howard is going to stay there. Right?

          • skeeds

Howard already allegedly broke the rules to meet with the Nets. If he's indeed considering it as an option, Smith could get pretty much anything he wants from them. Make that everything except Deron Williams.

          • Ryan DeGama

This is true. But they don't have much.

          • Mike

3 way team trade with Indy again and involving Bass?

        • Jack

i suppose we could always amnesty him. but still i am completley against trading kevin

          • SK35

Can't amnesty someone picked up in a trade – has to be someone already on your roster. So they would be stuck with Hedo.

          • hdavenport

They could amnesty him next year, and Turk has THREE more years on his contract, an underrated tragedy.

          • SK35

Are you sure? I thought amnesty rules said it could only be a contract on your roster when the CBA was approved.

          • hdavenport

Oops! The summary of the deal terms says that you can only amnesty contracts "in place" at the inception of the CBA. I took that to mean "signed" before the CBA, but you're right…you can only amnesty a contract if it was on your roster. My misread.

    • ripsonics

who plays point when rondo's gone? and where is the soul of boston if we trade KG too. THAT would be messed up.

I am not listing who I think would be the package to avoid a jinx… but this honestly is incredible stuff.

    • skeeds

OOOOh, it aaaall makes sense now… Dwight's 3 teams of choice to talk about a trade, are Lakers, Nets, and DALLAS. For those of us wondering why on earth Dallas let all their FA's walk this summer…

Dwight Howard and Dirk Nowitzki. hah. No more rings for anyone…

      • http://twitter.com/michaeljavid @michaeljavid

        yikes

      • Mike

As long as he doesn't go to the lakers I don't care…

        • hdavenport

          Strongly agree.

        • ripsonics

          me as well

        • skeeds

Off course not the Lakers. I'd be ok with the Nets. They never had a real team, they're trying to get thing going, good for them. But the Mavs? Who the hell is gonna guard them? It's like having Olajuwon and trading for Ewing…

  • GREENMAN

need a true center bad. What is DeAndre Jordan up to?

    • OKCeltic

Clips are going to resign him.

    • skeeds

last time I checked teams were battling over him like he was the other Jordan. Read something about offers reaching 10mil/year.

      • ripsonics

'tis the year to overpay centers. I honestly can't do anything else right now other than check this blog, and twitter. i feel possessed.

    • High Rollers

True center. Bah, humbug. What does that even mean anymore, true center? There's only one true center in this league today who doesn't break every five minutes and isn't over thirty. That's Dwight Howard, and he's on his own magical mystery tour that's so out of control already that I don't see him competing for a championship seriously until at least next year. True center, sheesh. Just get skill and size and preferrably together, as Doc requested.

  • High Rollers

Hayes… Two flaws in your theory (you know, the one implied by your final sentence). First, if Green did accept the QO, then he’d have veto (LOL) power over a trade to, I don’t know, say… New Orleans. Secondly, the Union is going to take significant action unless there is a trade resolution by Monday satisfying the commish/owners AND Chris Paul. You really think CP3 would swallow a trade to Boston at this point? If so, you never woke up from Wednesday’s dreamin’. I’ll stick with the Doc/KG/Pierce/Allen molded Rondo who’s STILL ON THE TEAM. And since when was a multiplicity of talented PFs ever a bad thing? Doc himself said, Just get me talent, skilled SIZE preferred. I’d say today’s dealings qualify. Not to mention the HEAT are playing small (if incredibly talented) ball. And when has this core, with or without Perk… or even Garnett, ever really struggled against or been afraid of D12? Give me hungry, ferocious 6’8 to 6’10 guys any day over the predominantly concrete footed seven footers out there any day. And for God’s sake, if you’re going to keep getting wet over CP3, just move LA already!

    • hdavenport

I agree that ending up with Paul is pretty much impossible given what happened yesterday.

I respectfully disagree that hungry, ferocious PFs are preferable to Dwight Howard. Everyone struggles against Dwight Howard.

This Heat smallball thing is a little specious because, as you imply, they have the league's best player, the third or fourth best player, and a guy who's top-five at his position.

      P.S. I live in LA.

      • SK35

Yes but the Celtics have beaten the Magic letting Howard get his and shutting down everyone else. Let him score 30 and grab 20 – as long as everyone else isn't scoring, the Magic (or whatever team he is on) won't win.

  • OKCeltic

Any chance of getting Rip Hamilton for vet min to back up RayRay?

    • Ryan DeGama

      Going to Chicago, it appears.

      • OKCeltic

Too bad. Could have been a good fit.

      • dslack

They're getting Rip AND Crawford? Ugh.

  • ripsonics

honestly.. think about it. Our huge thing is having Pierce and Rondo on payroll next year, freeing up serious cap space to go HARD after two big names to play with Rondo and PP, and bring back ray and KG. DWest on there for 8mil a year doesnt really fit the mold…

    • I_Love_Green

We'd still be able to go after a big name+smaller big name type guy. Don't doubt Danny's creativity!

    • SK35

Yeah, having a solid 1, 3, and 4 would be a draw to get a big name. I could see West staying and being the starter next year since this might be KG's last year.

  • http://twitter.com/michaeljavid @michaeljavid

    that's gotta be rough

    • hdavenport

      ROBB!!!!!!!!!!!

      • I_Love_Green

        KHAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!

        Oh wait, wrong time right?

    • SK35

Wait – what did it say? It was deleted by the administrator!

  • High Rollers

Hayes… I still don't think D12 is going to conquer (or join for that matter) the as constituted Celtics. As for the Heat's small ball, I acknowledged that it's a highly, okay infinitely, charged small ball. I'm just sayin' that while everyone and his brother is looking for some freakishly greener pasture to be planted on this side of the fence just because we've signed a handful of power forwards and DA's the D12 of GM multitaskers, I'm looking at it as fairly transparent dealings that went down today. I really don't expect a superstar trade for the C's this year. The radar is official off for that. I just want to see some basketball now. And preferably some W's. And a banner. Even if it comes with Phil Jackson ordered asterisk.

P.S. Wet jab rescinded. We'll keep this on the up and up.

    • hdavenport

Even without a superstar trade, hard to fault what Danny's done today. Definitely not saying that he needs to make a huge deal for this offseason to be considered a success. I mean, he GOT A FREE AGENT TO SIGN IN BOSTON. That never happens.

I'm just saying that this collection of players strikes me as a little odd, given the redundancy of some of the new signings, and we know that once Danny builds up enough assets, he'd prefer to trade for a superstar. So I think the possibility is out there, either now or during the midseason.

      • hdavenport

        during the *season

      • High Rollers

Agreed. My hope (being attached to the old team almost as much as Bill Simmons… almost) is that this odd crew turns Danny's head much like the Celtics of the 2010 playoffs did, thus making Danny stick with it for the season at least. Here's hoping. But you obviously have a valid point. Maybe it's just DA havin' that cake and eatin' too. He's gotten so darn good at it. Working on five years and counting. You're also right… fairly young, talented free agent signing in Boston is "WoW."

  • I_Love_Green

Do you guys realize how awesome this deal for David West would be? That would give us KG/West/Bass/JJJ at the 4. Obviously JaJauan will be spending a lot of time in Maine though. With this deal we will be able to sit KG at least one game a week, which is just beautiful. Crunch time lineup would be Big 4+David West which is also.

And concerning our problems at center, we have one guy at camp that they seem to like in Greg Steimsma. For what its worth, he won the d-league DPOTY. There's also Chris Wilcox who can play center against almost any frontline in the league, and then we still have the mini-mid level which could be used on Delonte, or another center.

    • SK35

I don't think they have the MLE anymore – it will be part of West's salary along with what they cleared with O'Neal leaving. West's deal is about 9 million a year (as reported right now) which would be O'Neal's almost 6 million plus the 3 million mini MLE.

      • dslack

I don't think so. Unless the rules changed in the new CBA, they can't use the MLE by adding it to another exception. It can be split among several players, but it can't be combined with other exceptions. Furthermore, it can't be used for a trade. NO signed West, and the Celtics traded enough salary to get within the required percentage of West's salary.

  • lakershater13

    Pacers: Rondo and Bass

    Celtics: Kevin Love, Collison

    Wolves: Granger, Hansbrough

Add some draft picks and a couple other players this could work. Lets face it. We are not going to get D12, Nene, or Gasol. Why not try to go after Love? The wolves get quality for Love. The Pacers get the PG they have been seeking along with Bass next to Hibbert. The Cs get Love and a decent PG. With KG,West, Love, PP, Allen, Green, and Wilcox I dont see PG being that important for the Cs.

    • Mr Cross

LOL at wolves giving up k. love

      • lakershater13

He is a FA next summer. The only thing that the Wolves have going for them is that he is restricted.

      • hdavenport

Might not be that crazy for the right package, given how they've consistently undervalued Love and are probably assured that he won't come back after next year (I certainly wouldn't if I were a team's best player and they were BENCHING me for ANTHONY TOLLIVER).

But I agree that Granger and Hansbrough isn't enough, nor would the Pacers give up Collison, Granger, and Hansbrough for Rondo and Bass.

        • skeeds

Not this year they aren't. That guy turned into the face of the franchise, they fired his coach who was at fault for benching him. His numbers are off the charts. 20pts 15rebounds, while shooting .42 from 3pt range, and .85 from the line for a player 6-10?
Right now, Kevin Love is THE man in Minnesota, he's not going anywhere.

          • lakershater13

Howard is THE man in Orlando. Its not likely he will stay with the Magic. Paul is not staying with NOLA. So why is Love staying in Minn? Rubio going to win him a title this season?

          • skeeds

First of all, he'll be a restricted free agent. That means Minnesota can match any offer and they will. They are actively trying to rebuild and gathering significant young talent around him. What situation is better for him? Taking less money to go to a true contender? At age 23? Why on earth would he do that?

          • lakershater13

Not sure how he would lose money by going to another team. Boston would certainly pay him next summer. Also why would he want to be stuck with Minn unless they actually start contending out west?

          • dslack

Because a player's own team can offer bigger raises.

          • redcon

Love has stated he`s happy in Minnesota more than once KG was happy in minn but after 10 + seasons of the owner not tryingg to win he left

  • I_Love_Green

So did Danny have a great day or what?

  • lakershater13

I love the idea of the Celtics getting West. Not sure I like the trade as much if they give up Bradley. I would hate to see CP3 be traded and all of a sudden Bradley ends up having a break out season with the New Orleans. I would rather see the Celtics deal Rondo and Green for Josh Smith or Rudy Gay and then start Bradley. Rondo cannot shoot. Bradley can knock down shots if they leave him open with KG, West, PP, and Ray on the floor.

    • skeeds

Dude are you high? Or are you Bradley's cousin or something?

On a team with KG, Ray, Pierce, Green, West, Bass, shooting is waaaay down on the list of things your pg has to be good at. Bradley is a good kid and all, but his footwork, dribble speed are about half as fast as Rondo's. Also, Rondo kinda averaged 12 assists and 3 steals I think last year. If Bradley was capable of those kinds of numbers, he'd be drafted over John Wall.

      • lakershater13

I love Rondo but his assists go way down when they decide to play off him and let him clank 20 foot jumpers. When Rondo is aggressive he gets to the line and clanks free throws. If Rondo could knock down a couple shots he would be in the discussion with CP3, Dwill, Westbrook, and Rose for best PG in the league. Remember JKidd only became great when teams had to respect his shot. Nash wouldnt have been as good if he couldnt shoot. Face it the ability for your point guard to knock down a shot is very important.
When the Celtics won in 08 was it Rondo finishing off games in the finals? I believe it was Sam Cassell because Rondo couldnt shoot.

        • http://twitter.com/michaeljavid @michaeljavid

Good memories of Sam Cassell punking these younger guards into getting the shots he actually wanted

    • SK35

Yeah but Bradley is not really a PG and he is NOT ready to start. I think Dooling would start over him and that would just be bad.

      • lakershater13

If you trade Rondo for Josh Smith or Rudy Gay you dont really need a true PG. Just someone who can knock down shots. Guys like KG, West, Pierce and Daniels can run the offense. When the Cs had Daniels before they used him as a point forward off the bench.

  • GUILTY

Any chance we have a play at Dwight? How about this nonsense?

Boston Trades: PG R. Rondo, SG A. Bradley, SF J. Green, PF K. Garnett, Bos. 2013 1st, Bos. 2012 1st (Clippers Pick)

    Orlando Trades: PG J. Nelson, C D.Howard

    ROTATIONS

    Orlando Magic

    PG- R.Rondo
    SG- J. Richardson
    SF- H.Turkoglu/J.Green
    PF- G.Davis
    C- K.Garnett

    BOSTON CELTICS

    PG- J.Nelson
    SG- R.Allen
    SF- P.Pierce
    PF-D.West
    C- D.Howard

    • SK35

Ha ha – Orlando would be "Celtics South." Did you try that on the ESPN trade machine?

    • Dave

Why don't we just save up for Dwight in free agency? Re-sign KG,Ray for cheap then add Howard.

  • tbunny

Even if nothing else happens, I loooove David West so great pickup for the celtics. He was one of the guys I was fantasizing about them getting but I didn't believe it was possible.

  • devin

report sasha popavich the other plater

    • GUILTY

Yahoo is reporting its a done deal

      Boston Herald saying its off

      • http://twitter.com/michaeljavid @michaeljavid

there is no such thing as a sasha popavich

        • High Rollers

I'm glad someone pointed that out. Last year we signed a Sasha Pavlovic. And Gregg Popovich coaches the Spurs. But no, there is no Sasha Popavich.

However, I'm thinking of calling the Big Four by one name from now on… Reviprondo. What do you all think? (Kinda like the Brangelina of the NBA. Or would that be LeBrade? Anyone who points out I didn't include Bosh's name in there, you're right. I like Chris Bosh, but he's still a loner, especially on that team. And yes, with their recent additions the Heat could end up driving most the League LeBattier this season. Nevertheless, I'll stick with the Celtics, where all four all-stars are equally stubborn, flinty, smart, surprising, battle-tested together, and absolutely looney toons… in the best of ways.)

And I propose the team make special jerseys commemorating Reviprondo when we win it all. (Knocking on wood and crossing confident fingers as we speak.)

What number would be on that jersey, you ask? 18, of course. What else? The more I write, the more I'm starting to feel it. Hoowa! Game time, huh!
