Celtics Draft Buzz: C’s Interested In Moving Up For Vucevic, Looking At Butler, Tyler

As we are less than 48 hours away from the NBA Draft, speculation is beginning to pick up all around the league involving a variety of moves. Here’s the latest filtering around concerning the C’s this morning. We’ll start with a report from the LA Daily News that pegs the C’s as one of the teams in moving up to pick Nikola Vucevic:

NBA personnel said this week Vucevic will probably be drafted somewhere between the No. 9 and No. 17 picks, which makes it seem silly there were doubts he would turn pro a few months ago. “He’s moved up drastically during his workouts,” said an NBA general manager who did not wish to be identified. “A lot of teams like him now.” The Knicks are believed to be highly interested, along with the Houston Rockets. The Boston Celtics are even interested in trading up in order to select Vucevic, according to sources.

Count them as possible, but certainly not probable, as the C’s potential trade assets this draft (barring a blockbuster) consist of Avery Bradley and future draft picks. Now, if the C’s consider getting a young big that can help now as a bigger priority than whatever potential Avery Bradley might bring them, than you could certainly make the case for dealing the 20-year-old. Given how highly Ainge speaks on Bradley however, it’s easy to deem this possibility unlikely.

Here’s also the latest from Andy Katz over at ESPN, who’s plugged in well within the organization, regarding some potential favorites for Boston at 25:

Boston brought back Marquette’s Jimmy Butler for a second workout within a week, putting Butler in the mix at No. 25. The Celtics are also considering Jeremy Tyler, who played in Israel and Japan recently, among other places. Cleveland State’s Norris Cole has also been tabbed as a favorite among some circles in the organization. Cole has interest in teams like Sacramento if the Kings don’t get a point guard in the lottery.

A lot of likable names we’ve talked about at length earlier this week at CelticsHub. Stay tuned for the latest on any more rumblings around the rumor mill for the time being.

    Jeremy Tyler, all day.
Only player in the draft that can help us immediately, and also the only player who we cant get better on the FA market.
If he's a nutcase big deal we screwed a #25 pick. Better than picking a guy who isn't any use for two years then get 10 mins a game off the bench. Need to draft for now, Tyler is perfect for now. KG will sort him out.

    • I_Love_Green

Tyler won't help us immediately. People are so high on him because of his potential to be great in a couple of years.

      • Joe

DRAFT JUJUAN JOHNSON! tyler is an immature question mark and vucevic is big, but unathletic. Jujuan johnson is athletic as hell, can score inside and out, is a solid rebounder, defender, and shot blocker… he would be able to contribute immediately, and could be the long term answer at PF. A young core of rondo, johnson, and green would be fun to watch in transition, and would give us the athleticism that will be so important in the NBA in coming seasons.

        • jon

yes i like johnson too ,, i say get johnson at 25 get whoever is the best at 55 and go straight for the free agents NOW beore they r gone ie josh smith / k mart and many others out there looking to move to a contender team like the Cs ,, danny needs to do this the right way and thats not to sit and wait like last year when they missed out on some good players !!!

          • Joe

I'd even trade up for johnson if they're scared he'd be gone. that kid is good and will get better. I think K Mart would be the perfect fit defensively and would allow oneal to come off the bench, where his 20-25 min a game would be repectable. Oh yea, and let baby walk, we don't need him clogging cap space now or in the future.

          • dasein

well, we are short one over-paid constantly injured big at the ass-end of his career. :)

    • dasein

I don't know why everyone thinks KG has this secret wand that can turn bunny boliers into marines. If the kid is a lazy-ass insecure jerk with delusions of grandure, then being yelled at by KG is probably more likely to push him over the edge than whip him into shape. Motivation doesn't come in one size fits all.

  • bigticket5

interested in nikola* vucevic right? who's sasha vucevic

  • -JP

i like Bradley, hope we don't trade him, I think if he can get more minutes he can help the Celts, esp on defense

  • skeeds

Ooo Vucevic has has a LOT of potential. Any big man who has put the time to develop a good shooting form has me sold. If Ainge is looking for a dirt cheap option at center he is perfect for the job. If we're pulling a trade stunt though, I hope we end up with Valanciunas. That guy has been playing pro ball for 4 years, he has great offensive skills, and can play and defend the pick and roll better than most starting centers in the NBA right now. It will take a miracle though…

    • Joe

the last thing we need is to get an unathletic big. that was our problem this year. the answer at center is not in this draft. we would be much better off drafting jujuan johnson, grooming him to replace KG, and getting a center in free agency (keyon martin would be ideal).

      • dalandan1

Kenyon Martin isn't a center. I also don't see him as ideal. He'd be okay at best. YMMV.

  • Jordan

Are all of you forgetting that Johnson doesn't play a lick of defense something that is coveted on our team. Yes he is athletic and can shoot but besides that he is nothing special and has minimal low post moves. Which we probably wont even get to see because its going to be tough for him to get to the block with his 150 pound frame. He is going to get pushed around so easily in the NBA it wont matter how athletic he is. Tyler might not be as polished as Johnson now but he has a big frame with low post moves and is a solid rebounder with the potential to be great. That is what this team needs, not an athletic 4 who has the body of a 3 and will get pushed around like my sister.

  • dasein

I still like Butler. Mentally tough, versatile defense at multiple positions, doesn't play outside himself. Won't be a star but will do what he can to help the team win, and can be a rotation player for many years. Its not the exciting pick, but maybe its the smart one at this position in this draft.

I understand wanting to fill needs, but if the guy to do it isn't available, what can you do.

  • celts advisor

I say get a guard here and matt howard from butler with pick #55

  • Faye

JaJuan Johnson seems like right choice right now to help KG because I don’t see any effective Centers left at the 25th pick.

By the way who is Sasha Vucevic, I think you mean Nikola. He’s a very solid rebounder and scorer. We need a REBOUNDER hands down, the C’s are dead last in rebounding. I’ve seen a 6’1 Rondo grab more rebounds than he should, it’s ridiculous. However I think Nikola will be taken a lot earlier.

  • Matthew

Don't trade up for Vucevic!!!!!!! Instead, go a few picks lower, and get a better player in Kenneth Faried.
Size doesn't matter (between Vucevic and Faried) as much as the difference in their desires does. Faried will run through a wall to be an NBA PLAYER, he'd kill to be a starter and win a ring. Vucevic won't. Faried fills the hole left by Perkins better than Vucevic. He'll do the dirty work, and be a clubhouse guy, just like Perkins.

  • Matthew

Also, if you aren't going to trade up, it should be Butler or Johnson, only two I'd consider that much

  • Jordan

Johnson doesn't play defense and is does not have a big enough frame to play the post in the NBA. We either trade up and get Vucevic/Faried or take the best available at 25 starting with Tyler or Butler.

  • Doc Rivahhs

Hey Danny, Lets draft fundamentals and SKILL with our first pick and not just athleticism like every other GM (so no Thompkins or JuJuan Johnson types please!). In my opinion Chandler Parsons is easily the best option in the late 1st round. He's a very underrated all around player, high bball IQ kid who can stretch the defense with his outside shot and break it down off the dribble. Plus he's scrappy defensively and on the boards. Don't pass him up or we'll regret it!
