Rajon Rondo, Remember?

Rajon Rondo hit a rough patch earlier this season where he played some of the worst basketball of his career.  Maybe he missed his friend, maybe he missed his fully functioning pinkie, maybe he was tired/complacent.  Who knows?  All I know is that last night against the Indiana Pacers, the kid did some work putting up 22 points, dishing out 8 assists and (most impressively) shot 9-for-13 from the field including a much needed 7-for-9 at the rim.  Obviously, Rondo’s performance was completely obscured by the awful loss incurred (say that 5 times fast).

While Rondo was going through his “funk” lots or people, Celtics’ fans included, began bringing up words like “overrated” and “not worth it”.  To those, I ask how many basketball players can do this?

Alright, now how many players can make this pass, going full speed, against an above average defensive team fighting for its playoff life?  If you say “many” I say you are a liar.

  • Robert

Great job by Rondo creating and then reading the flow of the defense, but also a nice job by Krstic making that catch cleanly on mid-air over-the-head pass.

  • Zee

Rondo reminded me of everything I loved about him last night. I feel sorry for some of the things I said. I pray he continues to attack like this. I still have a strong hope that our team is going to be fine come playoffs.

  • James Patrick

Please! Overrated?! C'mon! I'll happily bash our C's for playing like bums, complain about the Perk trade, and doubt how far we'll get in the playoffs. But I will NEVER call rondo overrated and anyone who does hasn't been paying attention!

  • RRR

Love Rondo, but shouldn't he just have gone up with that? Seems like he might have had a better shot than Krstic there.

    • Chris O

Agreed, and although he makes beautiful passes that no one else in the league can make sometimes he is too pass happy (I know that sounds crazy for a PG on the best passing team in the league). Sometimes he gives up easy buckets to try to get an assist

    • Chris

Yup. The pass was definitely the lower percentage play. No doubt it takes a whole lot of talent to make that play, but it doesn't mean it's the right play. Shoot the ball! Even if he misses the layup, he's drawn the big man and Krstic is there for the easy cleanup.

  • kricky

Yes he showed some signs of life last night.

But in the end got outplayed by Collison down the stretch. Roll the tape if you need proof.

Like the rest of the team he still has some ways to go before we can start talking come backs.

    • CG12

I'd definitely give up the nice pass to Krstic in exchange for some genuine D on Collison. Rondo always goes for the steal rather than just trying to stay in front of his man. There was one point in the IND game where the Cs were all back on D and pretty well set. Rondo, for no apparent reason, stayed in the middle of the floor to guard someone who was not his man, and belated yelled at someone else (PP?) to get over and pick up Collison. The other guy didn't get there and Collison got a lay-up. Guard your man Rajon.

  • I_Bleed_Green

Still overrated. Top 10 maybe (when he feels likes it). Definitely not top 5 like many people said earlier in the season.

    • Batman

Um please tell me who is better than him other than D-Rose, C-Paul, and D-Will. Nash and Westbrook are not better than him.

      • kricky

Better than Nash, but not Westbrook, who torched him the last time he was in Boston if you remember.

      • I_Bleed_Green

Westbrook is an MVP candidate…enough said

    • Chris O

You must mean player in the league. Which I'd put him around 12, 13, 14. PG I still put him top 5 easy possibly still top 3. You have to remember defensively and passing wise he is probably the best PG.

      • CG12

Going to have to disagree. Rondo's defense is quite over-rated because of his high steal total and highlight plays. His team defense is pretty suspect at times. He can't/doesn't get over picks, usually opting for the low percentage swipe at the ball. He regularly lets other teams force switches by not running hard to get back on his man after a pick-and-roll. His one-on-one defense is great, when he tries, but his effort can be spotty. He remains the most creative passer in the league. I'm not sure I'd say he is better than Nash, but he makes passes no else could make or would even try.

        • Chris O

I would say he is better than Nash, as of this year, passing wise. As you just said he 'makes passes no (one) else could make or would even try'. He has a knack for doing the incredible passing wise and also can pass extremely accurately with BOTH HANDS (I have never seen a righty that passes better with his left). His defense is phenomenal. Yes his team defense suffers when he gambles but his 1 on 1 defense is the best at his position in the league. I agree he should gamble less and play more solid good 'D' then go for great 'D'. But he is a defensive force at times. There is a reason he has been and probably will be all defense. Yes he has been weak on 'D' lately but I think its more nursing injuries than any1 let on (lateral quickness had seemed hampered).

      • I_Bleed_Green

If the Celtics have a top 3 pg, the rest of the league can forget about it and just hand us banner 18.

        • Batman

the lakers have the best SG they have a top 3 PF they have a top 3 C but they aren't getting banner 17. see what i mean?

  • Tos

Consistency. That’s what Rondo is lacking in order to be in the CP3, D-Rose conversation.

  • JP2

There is absolutely no way Perk cleanly catches that pass like Nenad does… just saying

  • Batman

Torching another PG doesn't make them better than that PG. Derrick Rose torched C-Paul. He isn't better than him. Rondo is better than Nash because although Nash has a much better offensive game, Nash is too old now to carry a team like Rondo can
Meanwhile Westbrook is not as good as Rondo, his ability to manage a team is nowhere near close and his abilities are a little underpar Rondo's

    • Ryan DeGama

I find it remarkable we even include a guy of Nash's age in this conversation, much less concede his offensive game is better than Rondo's (which it is).

A player for the ages down there in Phoenix…

    • I. R

I don't know where you get the self-righteousness to say Rondo is better than Westbrook. Not only does Westbrook have the tougher Conference, but he also statistically bests Rondo.
Also, where is Rondo on the Pts/Reb/Ast list? He doesn't even break the top 50 list, like the elites of DRose, DWill, CP, Nash, Westbrook, etc. That means he isn't as effective at managing his team as people make him out to be. Rondo has 3 elements to work with – the best 3 point shooter in the NBA, a 7 footer, and a Paul Pierce. Rondo too often gets the credit for what his team does simply because he handles the ball the most.
Also, Derrick Rose is better than Chris Paul. Clearly you don't watch any other NBA games other than those which involve the Celtics.

      • Batman

First off no one except paid analysts and bloggers watch all the games. i do watch many but for normal fans the eye test is stupid. right clearly derrick rose is better than chris paul because u watch the games.

      • Chris O

As of th is year PGs in my estimation, 1 – Rose, 2 – Paul, 3 – Deron, 4 – Rondo, 5 – Westbrook. And sorry I. R. offensive stats aren't everything. Rondo is a better passing, defensive and rebounding PG than many of the others you would debate are better thna he is when realistically they are only better scorers.

  • Batman

R U KIDDING ME. OK MAYBE U THINK RONDO ISN'T AN ELITE BUT U HAVE CHRIS PAUL THAT LOW?

    • I_BLEED_GREEN

Note that in my post I said "NOT IN PARTICULAR ORDER"

      • Batman

        yea i forgot that

  • Mariya

Whoever said Rondo was "overrated" really should be poked in the eyeball. And I'm being nice here.

    • Batman

      Poked in the eyeball! Yea!

    • Chris O

      You tell em Mariya

  • Batman

fun fact stephen curry actually took rondo's spot apparently

    • Chris O

Well fun fact, everyone that made the team at guard took Rondo's spot lol. I could say it was D. Rose

      • Batman

no rose already had a spot
the media hyped up their "rivalry" and claimed that Rondo quit cause Rose took his spot but actually curry got the last spot and was going to get it regardless

        • Chris O

Yes Rose had a 'spot' almost all the way thru. But since Rondo actually moved to starter at one point and then kept getting pushed further and further down the depth chart to be 'last one out' so to speak every guard bounced him in one way or another. Really Curry got it for being a shooter. Rose and Chauncey made it because they could run the team, which was why Rondo was GOING to make it. Not for his shooting. So even though Curry was 'last one in' he really wasn't the one that took Rondo's 'spot'. Plus no one took Rondo's spot, he wasn't cut, he left for 'family reasons' lol

  • I_BLEED_GREEN

Oh I forgot Curry, he's ahead of Rondo too

    • Batman

      WHAAAT

  • I_BLEED_GREEN

How can anyone rank Westbrook below Rondo? Do you actually watch games other than the Celtics? Danny Ainge would put of package of Rondo, Glen Davis plus a first round pick for Westbrook.

    • Batman

Also that is way too much for Westbrook.

  • I_BLEED_GREEN

I don't hate rondo…I wish he's the best player in the world but the reality is that he's not that good.

  • Chris O

Batman, Rondo is clearly elite, sorry but any1 who doesn't know that is an A$$hat. So you win lol

    • I_BLEED_GREEN

Celtics fans living in their dream world….

      • Chris O

wow the same dream world that has him in most 'experts' talk for top PG (although he's not the top), has him in 2 consecutive All Star games and has him making all defensive teams. C'mon man boi was on FIRE earlier in the season. Until he started to miss games with his multitude of injuries he was on a lot of people's lists for early season MVP. You do remember he was averaging over 13 apg for the first 3 months of the season right?

  • Batman

also a reason i defend rondo so homerisly is cause come on, his NBA career is a good rising up dream. he came into the league as the next BREVIN KNIGHt and now hes being called the next jason kidd. hes worked too hard to not get credit. but ur right. a lot of ppl give him too much credit

    • I_BLEED_GREEN

I got you. I am not here trying to be an asshole or whatever. It just doesn't sit well with me that people are givng him too much credit for what he isn't.
Rose and Westbrook's jump shots are Rondo-ish in their first year but see how they have progressed since. If Rondo is a hard worker, he better get in the gym.

      • Batman

Green he has been hitting the gym. The reason he hasn't developed a jumper is because of his huge hands that no one has the answer for.
