Practice Report: Injury Updates on Big Baby, Delonte West, Von Wafer, & Shaq

The Celtics had an open practice in Waltham today in front of select friends/season ticketholders which lasted about 90 minutes before a small crew of Celtics, including new addition Carlos Arroyo, fielded questions from the media. Here’s a quick rundown of what we learned.

Glen Davis Takes Questions: The power forward who has missed the team’s last two games with a strained patella tendon, was upbeat upon taking questions from the media and felt great about his progress in recovering from the injury. Nonetheless, he still was unsure about his potential return date, although Doc Rivers hinted the team was planning on keeping him out “at least a couple more games” in order to get him back on the floor completely healthy.

Carlos Arroyo’s Intro: The newest Celtic point guard took questions from the media for about seven minutes in a rather uneventful session. Arroyo seemed surprised about how the Heat released him and appeared unsure of why he went from the starting lineup to the waiver wire so quickly. However, the veteran guard was savvy enough to sidestep any extra resentment or revenge questions towards the Heat, saying he only “wanted to win a championship” with Boston. Naturally, a crying question was asked as well about the Miami locker room, but Carlos delivered a playful no comment to that one as well. His line of the day? “I like to say you guys got 4 million new followers in Puerto Rico, they’re truly excited about my situation.” Welcome to CelticsHub Puerto Rico fans!

Doc’s Endless Injury Updates:

  • Von Wafer will be “out for awhile.” Didn’t get any more specific than that, but doubtful we will see him for the next couple weeks from the sounds of it, perhaps even more. Not good news for a thin wing depth chart.
  • Delonte West is doubtful for both tomorrow and Friday night’s game against Philadelphia. He rode a stationary bike during the practice session and his new target return date is Sunday, although that date has changed 2-3 times in the past couple weeks. Clearly, the team just wants to get him healthy and with Arroyo ready to suit up tomorrow night, there’s no reason to rush West back from his sprained ankle.
  • No new news on Shaq, just some playful banter on his 85 percent comments from yesterday.
  • Overall, just 10 players dressed in the practice session and that’s who will dress it looks like for the next two contests at the very least. Let’s hope Carlos can pick up this offense quickly.

What's so "funny" is that all these injuries happen from no contact or major clashes with other players. They just "happen."

    • Jeff

True! These guys are simply fragile. T.Parker got a sprained calf and came back to the court 3 days later. Kevin Durant, sprained his ankle badly and is still playing, so that tells you a lot about certain players in the NBA.

      • funben

I think that also tells you a lot about coaching/medical staff and also the significance of a certain player's role in the team vs the need to wait in order the have them healthy for the playoffs.

  • Gay 4 Shaq

Seriously this is just not even funny anymore. You could make a pretty decent startin lineup with our injury list. Shaq at center, JO at power forward, Baby at small forward, Delonte West at point guard and Von Wafer at shooting guard

  • Chris O

Ok, Delonte will be back when 100% healthy which is perfect now you go legit 3 deep at PG. Von Wafer isn't super needed for wing depth right now. You just grabbed Jeff Green and Pavlovic. 4 wings is enough for MOST teams. That leaves 5 spots for bigs on the active roster (after the 3 PGs and 4 wings). That gives you Shaq, KG, Krstic, BBD, Murphy. That leaves JO, Von Waf and Avery off the 12 man and sitting in the back of the 15 man. That's a damn deep team. FYI in a week when Delonte comes back he can play the 2 if needed. Meaning you basically have 3 pople who can play the 3 (Pierce, Green, and Pav), 3 who can play the 2 (Ray Allen, Pav, Delonte).

    • PortugeuseCeltic

Sounds about right, but Murphy over JO in the 12 man? You gotta be joking. If JO is healthy I'd take him any day over Murphy, rusty or not.

      • Chris O

JO isn't healthy. And even if he comes back I don't know if he could beat Murphy out. Lets face it the are regardless the 5th big. I love JO but he may never be near 100% again.

  • Chris O

I'd say Shaq, Delonte, Baby, Wafer, JO in order of importance.

  • john schaffer

too bad next year they got to pay JO again 6 million like they are paying rasheed, usless ,wallace
