Troy Murphy to Sign with Celtics

Troy Murphy has made his decision.

ESPN’s Marc Stein is reporting that Murphy will sign a deal with the Celtics.

Murphy told ESPN.com via e-mail that he has chosen to join the Celtics after spending much of the past 48 hours agonizing between Boston and the Miami Heat since reaching buyout terms with the Golden State Warriors on Sunday.

Murphy also received recruiting pitches this week from Portland, New York and Orlando, sources said, but the 6-foot-10 forward was always determined to sign with a top contender in anticipation of making the first deep playoff run of his career. Murphy has played in more games (639) than any other active player without appearing in the playoffs.

Stein also wrote on his Twitter account: “Troy Murphy HIMSELF confirms to ESPN.com that he is going to Boston. B-O-S-T-O-N”

A conflicting report by Yahoo’s Marc Spears said that Murphy had chosen to sign with Miami, but now it appears that Boston is in fact Murphy’s destination.

More details to come as things become clear.

If I'm Troy Murphy (I'm not), I'm playing "Shipping Up to Boston" on my iPod…then, I look online to find "Miami" by Will Smith (because I don't put $#!+ like that on my iPod)…upon viewing the second song – the decision is quite easy.

Seriously, I'm pretty happy about this pick-up. Miami ends up getting a punk, washed up player in Bibby who can't defend – for whom they have to drop one of their current players – and we get Murph.

I'm sure that after a couple weeks in our system, Murph-Nenad-Greeny will start to really come around – and we'll start to actually feel good about our bench…

BBD better be careful – he's playing himself out of playing time right now (especially with talented guys like Green and Murph that can play his position)…

    GO CELTICS!

    • John V

Bibby isn't "washed up". He may be a punk and defensively challenged, but offensively, he's a huge upgrade over Chalmers. The Heat are getting better, but so are we.

      • kricky

Considering the lyrics of the song ("I'm shipping off to Boston to find my wooden leg"), wouldn't it work better as theme music for Powe :)

I hope we sign him too!

      • CsFanInArkansas

Fair enough, John…I guess I threw in "washed up" because Bibby is one of those guys that just makes me scowl subconciously whenever I see him on the court…..like Joakim Noah…..or the Devendorph punk from Syracuse a year or two back….

So….guilty….you got me….Bibby may not be washed up quite yet, and I said so out of pure dislike.

Heat still don't have the pieces they need to beat the East champs.

        18, BABY!!

  • Darius

    YEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!

He is not a panacea by any means, but he is a very much-needed piece to number 18 considering the recent trades. I think he's realy going to help space things out for us offensively.

  • Jamie

Good. Now go get Brewer to fill out the 15. Huge upgrade over Semih.

    • CsFanInArkansas

Don't we still have two open spots???

      I mean, there's no way we're keeping Chris Johnson (6'11'' and 156lbs)…RIGHT?!

    • jack

Brewer and a 3rd string point guard would be nice. Just in case for nights like last night where delonte can't go. Avery Bradley didn't played fairly well, but without a backup point guard it puts a lot of pressure on pierce to be the facilitator.

  • somguyinsac

Spray tans for everyone, on me!

    • Zee

Assuming everyone here is white… ;-)

      • CG12

Hey, we don't discriminate. Anyone who wants a spray tan can have one.

        • Zee

In that case, I'll take some bronzer. LOL

  • John V

    Yay!

I definitely think he will contribute. Almost as importantly, I'm am *sure* he would have contributed to the Heat. I'm glad wer'e getting him, and glad we're keeping him away from them. :)

And, yeah, Brewer would be nice too. Though, even with all the injuries and old legs, I'm not sure there are enough minutes to make it worth his while.

    • talesofJP

Getting Murphy and Brewer would be nice. Not sure if there is another buyout PG available beyond Bibby, but if there is hopefully we can get him if Delonte can't go/gets injured again.

  • kricky

Good news. We don't have to expect too much form him. But I wouldn't be surprised if he plays really well in the limited role, either.
Most importantly it keeps him off the Heat.

  • Chris O

Troy Murphy, the perfect Celtics player (an Irish looking and named white guy).

    • kricky

The signing came in the knick of time. How did we even survive the last 3 games without picking one of these guys up. LOL

  • lakershater13

Clearly a good business move on the part of Murphy. Who wants a spray tan in Miami? Everyones already tan. Business will be booming up in Boston.

On a serious note. Someone please tell me when bought out players can join a new team and play.

    • Chris O

ASAP, they have to join by March 1st or they can't play in the playoffs with the new team.

      • mikecorea

They have to be released before March 1st.
        http://twitter.com/stein_line_HQhttp://twitter.co

        • Chris O

They must be signed by the new team on March 1st as well, otherwise they are eligible for the regular season ONLY.

          • Chris O

Least that's what I read says

          • somguyinsac

They have to be released by March 1st and clear waivers before they can sign with a new team in order to be playoff eligible. If they're headed back to the team that released them, they have to clear waivers and wait 30 days before signing back with that team.

        • Chris O

Yeap Mike is correct from what else I just read, point in case was Ilgauskas.

  • I_Love_Green

    TROY MURPHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • graftonfarmer

Can I buy a Krstic jersey yet?

  • talesofJP

Did anyone look at the Celts upcoming schedule? March seems pretty easy with the exceptions being 2nd night of a back to back in New Orleans and March 31 against the Spurs.

    • Zee

Tony Parker may still be out by then.

  • BBynum

Personally, I'd rather have Kelenna Azubuike than Brewer, but I'd be happy with either. And yes, a backup point would be nice.

    • Chris O

We have Delonte. Between Rondo, Delonte and Avery as a spot we don't NEED another point. Especially if you want to have Pierce or Green play some point forward in a desperate or strategic situation.

  • BBynum

Murphy's a great pickup. Everybody speaks of him as if he's totally washed up but he is who he has always has been: a great rebounder and shooter who doesn't defend all that well or all that physically. But those skills were good enough to get him paid $12 mil per, and will look great on an offensively-challenged bench.

  • Razah

YEAH BOY. This takes off some of the heat from losing Perk.

His length and rebounding will help us tremendously, since Baby is neither.

  • Guest

After saying they were going to play it safe all season and not bring him back early or before the All-Star break, the Celtics inexplicably allow Perkins to come back for a game against the Cleveland Caveliers…

Perkins came back and got in 12 games before the trade.

Were they showcasing his health? Were they showing OKC that he was back and ready to go? OKC seemed like an organization that had plans in place for him… it took them less than a week to ink Perk to an extension.

When Perk came back we saw Shaq for a couple games before he went out… come along with me:

-Boston brings back Perkins early to show OKC he's really healthy from his offseason surgery.
-Shaq sticks around for a few games to make sure Kendrick can fill in at center then suddenly goes down with an injury no one can point to on any game tape.
-Perkin's bruised his knee in a game and suddenly we here Shaq is a few games away from being ready anyway.
-Boston moves Perkins for their most glaring hole; wing depth.
-OKC is ready and waiting with open arms to make Perkins part of their future.
-News comes out that Shaq has lost 15 pounds in the last 3 weeks.
-Troy Murphy is bought out and decides to sign with Boston
-The moment that happens there is news that Shaq's "inflamed aquilles" just got worse and he'll be out for 2 more weeks…

Connect the dots here with me…
The ebb and flow of our depth at center corresponds directly with the Big Shamrock's return. More depth? His injury is worse… meanwhile he's dropping weight while he's away… see what I'm getting at here? In his head, Shaq wants to be the Finals MVP this year.. I guarantee it. Could anything be better for the Celtics?

    • CG12

I agree – Shaq's health and effectiveness have a lot to do with the team deciding to make the trade. Shaq has been very effective when he has played, even though he was obviously not in particularly good shape. It would probably be hard for him to maintain top-notch condition all year, so they gave him some time to get used to the other guys on the team, and now are taking a very conservative approach to his health, getting him healthy and in comparatively good shape.

    • Chris O

Yes Doc is doing with Shaq what he did with the whole roster last year. Rest up big fella and come back to full force in the playoffs. With the bigs we know have Shaq, KG, BBD, Krstic, Murphy we are fine. I like it

      • Batman

        You didn't mention Jermaine!

  • jack

Heat dropped Arroyo to make room for Bibby. Except for the comments by heat fans he might not be a bad pickup. What do you all think?

    • CsFanInArkansas

I'd take Avery's cross-eyed twin (this person probably doesn't exist) over Arroyo.
If Delonte goes down – we'll just have to do something weird to give Rondo his 6-10 minutes of rest each game (like, play someone out of position as the PG for a few strategically located stretches).
We know that Arroyo doesn't belong in a Celtics uniform.

I'd much rather take a shot with a guy like Kelena Azubuike (sp?) or Corey Brewer and hope that they are hungry to prove to the rest of the league that they can hack it…than a guy like Arroyo…who's likely going to sit at the end of the bench anyway…

    • Chris O

I agree. 3rd string pg as an emergency 15th man….not bad. Still nothing to write home about either

    • jack

That's all I think he would be, a 15th man, and wouldn't hurt to have on nights delonte couldn't go like last night. Nothing great, but still worth looking into. We can always waive chris johnson to sign Azubuike or brewer.

I can't think of any better free agent PG out there.

      • Chris O

Agreed, would have liked Bibby as the 3rd string PG, but he wasn't gonna come here for that

        • jack

That would of been great. Both Murphy and Bibby choosing C's over the heat. Miami fans would really start whining

  • John V

No, not on Brewer! I meant Ray and Paul are still going to play a lot of minutes, even with THEIR old legs. With Wafer, and Green playing some 3, and West playing some 2, there are not many minutes left.

Yes, of course there are enough minutes left that we still want him, but are there enough that he'll want to come here, when there are other teams that can offer him a bigger role?

  • Chris O

C's have 16 games in March, anything worse than 12-4 in that stretch would be garbage. They have a really easy March schedule. 7 home games 9 road games.

  • lakershater13

Hmmm Bibby couldnt win with Josh Smith, Joe Johnson, Crawford, and Al Horford. Why would he all of a sudden win now with the Heat. Granted Wade, James, and Bosh are a huge upgrade over those other guys. I just dont see bibby at this point in his career helping.

    • John V

Offensively, Bibby is the PERFECT pg for that team. He hits 44% of his threes. He's led a team to the Conference Finals. What do you mean he couldn't win with the Hawks? They won plenty. They won at least as much as they had any right to. You think if the Hawks had Mario Chalmers instead of Bibby in any of the past three years, they would have advanced further in the playoffs??!?!!

Bibby can't guard a chair. But offensively, he's a huge upgrade. The Heat have a problem with two massive egos and a young coach who never played in the league trying to control them. Bibby can set things straight, and he doesn't need to dominate the ball to do it.

I guess it's fun, sometimes, to just say every other team in the league sucks, but really, why would we watch the games if that were true? The Heat are good and they just got better. If we meet up with them in the playoffs, it will be a real challenge.

      • NHBluesMan

i personally think Bibby is a wash… he adds more offensive firepower, but the Heats defensive efficiency is going to drop because of him, which means that LeBron and Wade are probably going to have to expend more energy when it comes to playing the Celtics, which gives them less energy on offense. Arroyo could at least keep up with other PG's, and we've seen what Rondo can do to Bibby and hit matador defense

  • lakershater13

In a surprising move the Wizards bought out Al Thornton. Anybody like him if we lose out on Brewer?

    • John V

Thornton is going to Golden State, for some bizarre reason.

I fear Brewer will go to Dallas. They have a lot more minutes to offer him. I hope he comes here. Maybe Pierce could call him and say, "you know, I really only want to play 25 minutes a night, anyway" :)

  • John V

Looks like Gadzuric, Kapono, and TJ Ford all will NOT be bought out.
