Practice Report: Nate Questionable for Tomorrow, West Out vs. Heat, Semih & Shaq Could Be Out Awhile

The C’s just wrapped up practice over in Waltham and there was a host of news filtering out of the team’s first practice send the loss against the Lakers last week. Here’s the big news of the day, in bullet points.

* Nate Robinson did not practice, but hopes to play tomorrow against the Heat.

* Delonte West did practice but will not play tomorrow against the Heat. Doc Rivers hopes to have him suit up against the Nets Wednesday, barring any setbacks in practice early next week.

* Semih Erden and Shaquille O’Neal both aren’t healing well, and it remains unclear just when they will return after the All-Star Break as they both battle groin and Achilles’ injuries respectively.

Here’s a few quotes from Doc and Nate from practice, courtesy of Chris Forsberg of ESPNBoston.com:

On Who Practiced: “Same group of guys [practicing]. Nate didn’t practice but I think he’ll play tomorrow, but i think he’ll play. He went through walk through stuff. I think so, but we really don’t know.

On Weighing Importance Of Game Vs. Heat: “They all carry weight. Whenever you have a game to when you can win the season series, it carries weight. Our guys don’t get caught up with the other meeting stuff.”

On Delonte’s Status: “He practiced but he won’t play. We’re hoping he plays Wednesday. It’d be great to get a game in before the All-Star Break. That way he’ll have that under his belt. We’ll see though. We’re going to practice Monday and Tuesday and that will give him a chance to take a lot of hits.”

On Semih and Shaq: “They’re out until after the break, we don’t know when they will be back after the break right now. Semih’s groin and Shaq’s Achilles’ are both not improving at all. Obviously we thought we would have them back by Thursday, but that’s fine. Shaq’s heel hasn’t gotten worse, it just hasn’t healed.”

On The Injury and wearing a brace: “I wear a big old knee brace like Perk. When he shot, I got too close and when I landed, we hit knees at same time. Doc said it was like a perfect hit.”

On Playing Tomorrow: “It will swell, but the pain in there is kind of funky right now. I hope it’ll be okay for tomorrow. I can walk and everything, but it’s the running and the jumping that hurt.”

Nate noted that he will try to do whatever it takes to get ready for tomorrow and said he was at the team’s practice facility until 11pm last night taking shots and getting treatments.

He's been "retired" for a while now, so I'm guessing about 260 pounds or so. :)

At this moment, irrespective of the game on Sunday, I have to put Miami and Chicago as the favorites in the East; Boston still is a" #1 team" based on "what could have been if not for injuries" – same as 2009 and 2010 Celtics: great effort, passion…and no banner….What can they offer next season, 2011-2012?

With neither Shaq not Semih showing signs of getting better after weeks off (!) – Boston's chances for #18 have become painfully low. We heard discussions about adding a "wing-man", now there is a need for a center since Shaq and Semih – not to mention JO – IF they return, are likely to get hurt again soon: a few games at 10-20 minutes seems to be devastating to their bodies.
Two quality players are now needed and it is unlikely Boston can get two – this puts a huge question mark on banner #18. With each month Celtics and their fans are waiting for more and more players to return…the list grows. I think Danny Ainge and the fans are beginning to see the pattern.

Stop it. Our injuries were worse last year. Just be glad our starting lineup, and our best bench player haven't gotten any serious injuries this year.

What???? We are concerned about this game and the new few. Not the season. We are in great shape down the stretch. We just need folks to get healthy. No-one except J.O. has an injury that prohibits them from play – and playing great – THIS season.

How do you think we have done so well so far, AND with so many injuries? Once everyone is standing on two good feet we'll be a problem for ANY team.

Gotta see things from the right perspective. The Celtics and their fans want a title THIS season. Right now, THIS season is the only one that matters. We'll concern ourselves with the future when it arrives.

"new few" should read "next few"

I doubt Semih's groin will keep him out very long. If its not a tear, then he should be back maybe the first game after the break. Groins can take awhile to fully heal, but it should be healed enough in a week and a half. I'm not sure what Shaq's injury is, but I can't see him being out for more than 1 week after the break.

If we can somehow, with 9 guys (7 really), win the game tomorrow that would be huge for us. Also pretty depressing for the Heat.

no way we stop the Heat right now without a backup 3. Unfortunately Lebron is getting into his usual mid-season stride, where he has almost a triple double every night, blasting opponents for 30 points more or less. So yeah, I'd rather we gave them a free pass for tomorrow instead of pushing Pierce to the limit. Or KG for that matter. Wade I'm not worried, he usually has lousy games running after Ray Allen.

There's no way in hell the C's are gonna take it easy tomorrow, I'm sure, but still, with such a shallow bench, it's not looking good. Perk should give them a thing or two to think about though.

  • KBA

What about Stephane Lasme to backup Pierce? Can we still get him? He almost made the cut in pre-season and plays with great effort.

    • I_Love_Green

      Pretty sure he's still injured.

  • Zee

There IS a bright side to the remainder of the season. After All-Star week we should be in very good shape. Sure, we MAY lose tomorrow, but we'll be in GREAT shape come playoffs. Hopefully everyone can stay healthy at that time.
