Are C’s Championship Contenders? ESPN Experts Say No?

There’s no need to dwell on this too much but I think the list below speaks for itself. ESPN.com’s experts announced their picks for the NBA Championship late yesterday and out of the 25, there was just one lonely soul who picked the C’s to bring home Banner 18. Perhaps incidentally, it was the guy who follows the team the closest.

Results: L.A. Lakers (12 votes), Miami Heat (12 votes), Boston Celtics (1 vote).

For the record, just 6 of the 25 experts chose Boston to make the NBA Finals, with Miami getting about 70 percent of the votes in that department. The good news? The C’s are the unanimous choice to win the ever challenging Atlantic Division. Let’s hope Doc Rivers posts this list in the locker room today to add even more fuel to the fire.

You should've put quotations on the word, "experts". Most of them should be covering the fasion world anyways. So easily impressed by glowing things.
Atlanta will beat the Miami Heat in the 1st RD of the 2010 playoffs !
In case you are wondering, Orlando will be seeded #1 and Atlanta will be the 7th seeded.

    • koolaid

      agree. "experts" are sheep. baaaa.

      Cs are stacked.

  • John (in Lakersland)

Wait, that poll is "Who's most likely to win?" Not "who's the top 3"

Celtics are definitely contenders. I hate everything Celtic in this world, but they're stacked. They can potentially be one of the best interior defensive teams ever. If Rondo can make a jumper with any consistency, they're a lock number 2 or 3 in the East and probably the most feared team in the playoffs. I think they have the highest playoff experience of any Eastern team.

I think most of the ESPN analysts would put Celtics in the top 3-4 in their list of contenders.

The Lakers deserve the hype, their back-to-back champions. They've proven the ability to win in the playoffs, they have the experience.

The Heat are nothing but hype, look great on paper, but that's about it. It's ridiculous that these "experts" are all jumping on the band wagon when they team hasn't proven a damn thing yet.

But whatever, we're used to it by now. Not a single one of these guys picked Boston to win in any series before the finals. First the Heat were going to give them trouble, then Cleveland was going to sweep them, then Orlando was going to win in five. Look how that turned out?

Keep doubting the heart of a champion and it'll prove you wrong every time.

    • Perry

      Well said.

Miami has two huge craters: at the 5, and the point … not to mention being extremely thin on the bench. Spokestra has been put in a no win situation, and will be the pinata this season unless they fulfill the media's wild fantasy.

Was the Sports Guy out to lunch? Because the only people at the 4 letter network we can lean on are Simmons and Forsberg.

Someone should keep a copy of this picture, and repost it at the end of the season to show who was wrong about their predictions.

  • JP-

Yeah Bosh got a lot of hype for not being much of a super star, he is a good player no doubt, but when you're the only good player on a bad team, like the Raptors were, you're numbers will be inflated. Not sure how Wade will work out with this team either, Wade needs the ball in his hands to be most effective, so does James, something will give. As for the experts, it doesn't matter what they think, although its surprising that so many picked the Heat.

  • Big George

We saw how well the experts picked last year too. And the thing with the Lakers they are really just a Kobe injury away from being just above average. I do like all the pressure on the Heat though it will be the weight of the world on their shoulders.

    • John (in Lakersland)

you can say that about pretty much every team:

Dallas is a Dirk injury away from being a lotto team.

  • ElRoz

Didn't 9 out of 10 "experts" on ESPN, who don't look like they have played 10 min of basketball in years, pick Lakers to win in the finals in 2008?

Did they not pick Cleveland, and then Orlando to beat Boston in 2010 playoffs? Hardly any picked the 2010 finals to go to 7 games. I see a consistent neglect of Boston. These guys either don't realy watch basketball, don't understand it, or are very very busy with other affairs and so make their NBA predictions on the run.
Maybe they copy off each other, like bad students do in high school?

  • ElRoz

And Hollinger always picks after LeBron, he kept picking Cleveland, now he picks Miami. Let's wish him the same results as in 2009 and 2010.

I can see teenage Hollinger now: sitting at the end of the bench of his high school team and recording game statistics. "Watch and learn kid, watch and learn!"

  • John (in Lakersland)

There are as many civil lakersfans as there are civil celts fans. :P

But I disagree that the Celts are being overlooked. It's just right now, the looking is focused on the Heats. And you have to admit, for good reasons. Love em or hate em, they are compelling to look at. They'll be as grand as the queen mary, or sink like the titanic. Either way, I wanna see.

I would like see the Celts in the Finals as that's the most intriguing, but I rather see the Heats as the Lakers have a better chance of winning. That should tell you all you need to know about your Celtics.

that and I still hate them. and they smell bad. :)

I was going to post something about this yesterday but i thought eh,so to my surprise i saw this. This is not new,we have always been considered the underdogs when it comes down to the "expert" prediction. In '08 i think 90% of the "experts" predicted the Lakers to win the finals…..WRONG.Had KG been healthy in '09 we would've won back to back chips, but that's pointless. The Fakers are back to back champs, move on and get over it.
I think a lot of people are riding this media Miami Heat wave blindfolded, or just plain blind.
I really hope Doc does indeed hang this list in the locker room. You don't ever write us off, but that's cool.Hey these "experts" have to do their job, unfortunately 99% of them don't understand chemistry, core bond of a team that's been together for 3 years and running, togetherness, premier coaching(Doc beats Spoelstra any day of the week).
