Post-game Reactions

Just completed a conference call with a vacationing Danny Ainge who offered these telling tidbits on the team’s roster situation.

On Sheed’s Contract Situation:

“It is probably going to be resolved sooner rather than later. I expect it to be done before training camp. We have looked at trade possibilities throughout the summer and will continue to look at those, but it will likely all be resolved shortly”

On Adding Another Piece to The Roster:

“One more piece is possible. I like the pieces we have at this stage and would be happy going into training camp with this team. It is possible though we could add another player, most likely for the veteran’s minimum, possibly a trade but most likely scenario is for veteran’s minimum.”

Reading in between the lines here, it sounds like the C’s have explored the trade avenues we all have this season involving Sheed’s contract and haven’t found a good fit.

With the roster filled at 15 now after Luke Harangody was officially signed today, and the team still looking for another shooter on the wing, Sheed being bought out of his deal to free up a roster spot seems likely, if the team agrees to term with a free agent veteran that fills a need a la Larry Hughes.

Much more from this interview on Perk’s status, Shaq’s role with the team and the C’s pursuit of him, on the way…..also extended interviews with Shaq, Doc and new signing Von Wafer and his role with the team.

So it seems Danny would rather open the roster spot and save his draft picks, then send the contract to get a trade exception.

I take this to mean no team was willing to absorb Sheed’s deal for less than a first round pick, and Danny doesn’t feel grabbing a trade exception, that may or may not even bring in a valuable player at the deadline isn’t worth a 1st round pick.

I think the vet min thing is unlikely, I just don’t see anything out there in the market at the minimum who’s worth it in order to be the 15th man on the roster. I’d much rather see them give them spot to Gaffney, who will come cheaper, and as least brings a defensive minded presence and high work ethic; rather than sign a guy like Hughes.

It’s either Gaffney, Hughes or Jarvis Hayes I think.

I wouldn’t mind Hughes or Hayes at this point, but they really need to get another backup for Paul, not Ray.

The only one who can really play SF is Quis whereas for Ray you could have VW, Bradley, Quis, or even Nate at times.

We need a SF not another SG. I’d rather Hayes for that situaton.

This could also be Danny playin Poker.

Some teams may want more than what the C’s are willing to give up for a player, and Danny’s gonna make em blink first by saying they’ll just get a vet’s min guy and buyout Sheed.

The man is shrewd…he did it with Shaq saying “We’ve had discussions…it’s not likely”. A week later Shaq’s wearing Green.

I’m guessing Danny’s phone will be blowing up when he gets back from vacation with people biting on that this is there last chance to shed the cap.

Funny that this “news” comes out at almost the same time as Sheed finally “anouncing” his retirement.

Now Sheed’s aas marketable as ever.

The two most valuable assets after FA were Dampiers unguaranteed contract and Sheed’s Retiring contract.

Let’s see what Danny get’s for it.

I would put Baby it spurts at SF to see what he can do. but leave Pierce or Allen in at SG with Baby at SF.

  • Glen Davis at small forward? Come on.

  • dont_drink_the_koolaid

danny is spreading FUD. anything is still possible.

    nothin small about baby

Hayes and Hughes are awful. Why pay more for someone we know is awful, then pay less for a guy who only might be awful (Gaffney.)

I mean at least there’s potential there, he hasn’t had a chance to prove if he can play in the NBA. Give him that chance and ya never know. Hayes and Hughes have had every chance to prove they can play in the NBA, and there’s a reason their the bottom dredges of the minimum barrel.

  • ball on the floor

how about sheed’s contract and glen davis for tayshaun prince?

  • Jay P

    @ball on the floor

No chance in hell, makes no sense for Boston now. Davis is the only true back up PF we have right now. Not to mention a valuable piece who’s shown possible starter level ability.

Shaq, KG, and Jermaine can’t play heavy minutes, we need reliable back up big man. Why would we trade one depth problem (SF) for another (PF)

  • There are some interesting time limits in this article however I don’t know if I see all of them middle to heart. There may be some validity however I’ll take maintain opinion till I look into it further. Good article , thanks and we want extra! Added to FeedBurner as well
