An Answer? Game 2 Open Thread

You all know the odds—that teams that go up 2-0 in best-of-seven series have gone on to win nearly 90 percent of the time. That only 14 teams in league history have ever rallied from a 2-0 deficit in any round. The Celtics are already facing the 47-0 Phil Jackson thing; lose tonight, and you’ll be reading about a pile of bad historical stats before midnight.

A win tonight, and this is a whole different series.

Consider this your Game 2 open thread, and this game promises to provide a lot of fodder for a nice open thread. We could see a bundle of adjustments in how Boston guards Kobe; how the C’s respond to the Gasol/Kobe high screen/roll; and how Doc divvies up the minute and match-ups among his four-man front line.

Tell us what you’re seeing—what’s working, what doesn’t appear to be working, how Rondo looks, etc.

Let’s hope we all sleep well tonight.

  • Zain

Having been at Game 1, I already feel confident going into tonight’s game. Boston looked slightly more alive in the 4th, so I’m thinking they finally woke up.

The biggest thing I can tell you guys is this: LA’s home court (fan wise) means nothing. The fan’s are soft as hell. They are scared–the place was QUIET during Boston’s run in the 4th–perhaps they remember game 4 of ’08? I’m not sure, but it was not a hostile environment at all. Only towards the end, when the game was over did I really catch heat for wearing a green jersey.

Also, as far as chants go: When Pierce is shooting freebies, the chant is ‘wheelchair’. I found that hilarious.

  • jay cutler

Boston can win at LA. The question is.. will the Lakers of game 1 show up again? Regardless of Boston’s stinker I thought they played out of their minds. Ron Artest walking into 3 point shots. Kobe Bryant scissoring passing lanes on defense. Pau Gasol’s length giving KG real trouble on his by-now predictable turnaround. The refs deciding 2008 was 2008 and this is 2010.

  • LAKERS FAN

Zain do us a favor and stay the f^&k out of LA. C’s go down again tonight. . . . . Champs over chumps.

  • Zain

Lakers fan…I plan to. What a worthless town. Now do us a favor and get off our hub if you’re gonna talk like that.

  • DRJ1

That 47-0 stat is just meaningless….. it’s Phil’s stat… different teams, different decades, and… it’s the coach’s stat, not his team’s… if the contest was coach playing vs. coach, it would matter…. as it is, it’s a junk stat.

But that 90% one… that one counts. This game is probably going to be the most important of the series.

  • Rich

Strongly rooting for Boston form here on out. Actually, just rooting against Kobe. All of the national media is now back on the Kobe is the greatest player in the history of the universe wagon, and I’m really just hoping he bombs it up tonight like LeBron in game 5. Would make my month tbh.

  • MP

Michael Jordan was on a LOT of those teams…which invalidates that statistic in usage with Phil and Kobe, as far as I’m concerned.

  • sacbobv

    Away we go!

    Go Celtics!!

  • complexity

Ray is going to have a huge game.

  • complexity

We need Rasheed in the game right now.

  • yordgreat

well 2 fouls on kg and BB not looking good…..

  • yordgreat

    nice quarter….hopefully it’ll hold up

  • DRJ1

The end of this 1st quarter was the first time I’ve seen Rondo really AWAKE since Cavs game 4. Finally!…. now if he’ll keep it up, and if KG can control himself…. and if Sheed can stay in the game……

  • http://celticshub.com Dee

Who would’ve known 3 months ago that in the first game and a quarter of the 2010 NBA finals that the best big for the Celts would be Rasheed!!!! He was right…he will be judged by the playoffs. Mr. Wallace; you keep this up, I owe you a big apology!

  • http://hoopstersworld.blogspot.com miss j.moxie

    Eep. Foul trouble.

  • complexity

Rondo has arrived and he brought Jesus with him.

  • Sophomore

Awesome start. But if we’re going to run like this, I don’t know if even Rondo can play 48. A few minutes for Nate?

  • DRJ1

KG comes in in 2nd quarter… and everything IMMEDIATELY goes to hell. He fails to bring the help D, he fails to JUMP, even, for a rebound…. KG is failing all around. So far, from what I can see…. KG is in very bad shape out there. Thank god for Ray’s heat and Rondo’s final awakening… ’cause looks like we gotta win this one with no significant KG input.

Hope it changes… but that’s what I see so far…….

  • RBD

    @DRJ1

    Agreed (sadly).

KG is mentally out of it and physically out of it.

  • DeVelaine

I can’t believe that JVG just called Rondo’s fake on Bynum a “Dragic” move… Was he not watching when Rondo did that same thing to Parker and Varejao?

  • Sophomore

    Andy Garcia’s moustache? Ridiculous.

  • Sophomore

Ron Artest on offense = weak sauce.

  • complexity

Ray Allen could break his finals record and maybe even the finals record for 3′s. When I said he was going to have a huge game. I was wrong, this is a gigantic game.

  • pilgrimtraveller

they’re rebounding and defending, and ray is hitting his shots, and the lakers bench looks like the lakers bench we know and love.

  • http://www.celticshub.com Zach Lowe

C’s must find another way to score other than Ray threes in transition/delayed transition.

Bynum has been LA” best guy so far, right?

  • RBD

By no means a secure lead. We’re headed for foul trouble this game. Do love the offense and the D has picked up since about 5:00 gone in the first quarter.

  • pilgrimtraveller

they’ll start over-playing ray, which will open something else

  • complexity

Who are you talking ish about now Kobe!

  • RBD

    Ray Allen is ridiculous.

  • RBD

Love Boston’s composure tonight. Even with KG out, they’re playing harder and smarter as we go.

  • RBD

Kobe flirting with hero mode the last couple plays…

  • DeVelaine

Sucks that Wallace has 3 fouls now, but that last one was a good foul. Without it, Kobe scores easy. Besides… Who outside of Lakers fans doesn’t like seeing Kobe forced to hit the floor?

  • http://www.celticshub.com Zach Lowe

That botched Sheed outlet pass is the kind of play that can change games. Awful. Don’t know exactly whose fault it was, but it was awful.

  • RBD

I wish I felt better about this lead.

  • RBD

Lakers could be upset about a few of these calls too.

Overall better zebra work tonight. Especially the non-tech on Perk. I think that was Kenny Mauer.

  • jack

If bynum picks up his 3rd, the Lakers will be hurting almost as much with their fouls as us.

  • RBD

    PERKINS OFF THE DRIBBLE!

  • RBD

We don’t have a single guy who can guard Gasol.

  • pam

that was HORRIBLE. i feel like killing someone. sooooo frickin annoying

  • RBD

Goddamn Shelden. Can someone please nail his ass to the bench?

  • Devon

    SUCK FHELDEN WILLIAMS!!!

  • Jay P

We should be up by 15 right now, horrible end to the half. Way to let them back in it.

  • Evan

Terrible awful horrific final 5 minutes.

  • Jay P

Allen goes 7/8 from 3, and you take a 6 point lead into halftime? Horrible, defense is looking sloppy.

  • DRJ1

Shelden is only playing because KG couldn’t stay in the game. KG is the core problem… he absolutely SUCKS… worse than useless out there. And I don’t know if the Cs can win a series with KG out to lunch like this.

  • RBD

Pretty much a fool’s gold half.

Lakers look like the better team.

    Boston’s frontline is completely overmatched.

  • Evan

I just computed Shelden’s +/- and my calculator says ‘number too high’ in the minus.

  • I love Green

Pierce didn’t play well on offense, and KG barely played. We should be up more but I’m fine with a 6 point lead, which should be 9. That ending of the 1st half was rediculous.

  • Devon

@ DRJ1 Agreed, it’s as though he doesn’t have it. It being the intangible desire to win championships.

  • RBD

KG’s problems are physical. He can barely jump half the time.

  • http://hoopstersworld.blogspot.com miss j.moxie

Didn’t like how that half ended. Way to let em back in it.

  • DRJ1

@Devon– Not sure if it’s desire — which I think KG does have — or, more likely, ability and COOL…. which is what Sheed seems to have in unlimited supply: a way to stay cool, calm and focused despite any kind of pressure.

Ray’s cannot carry the team with seven 3s per half. If KG doesn’t somehow turn it around, it’s hard to see how the Cs win.

  • Evan

I think there was an opportunity to really knock out the crowd and any flow if they drained a bucket after the offensive shoulder foul from Bryant to Allen. It only ignited the fuel when Allen got called for exactly the same call on the other end.

  • Coolin

Sheldin Williams wife has got to be one of the most embarrased people in the USA right now. Her husband has no business being on this court, he looks like he has never seen a basketball before.

  • http://www.celticshub.com Zach Lowe

I’m sure people have noted this, but Boston has given LA five points on botched outlet passes.

These are the things you just cannot do if you want to win the NBA title.

  • RBD

    @Zach

Not only that, they nearly stole about three others.

  • Evan

@DRJ1 there are others that could turn it on to change this game too. It would be IDEAL to have KG go off and play some solid minutes in the second half but if Pierce (0/3) or Rondo (3/10) step up you have a better chance obviously.

  • garry

our big’s are playing like a bunch of sissie’s….yeah i said it

  • Jay P

KG cant seem to play defense without fouling anymore, he’s just too slow right now.

  • I love Green

We need to start running more screens for Rondo and Pierce.

  • DRJ1

@Evan– Obviously, I hope you’re right. But I fear that without KG’s D on Gasol AND his contributions on O, our chances are not good…. unless, of course, Ray ends up with 14 3s for the game. Sure would LOVE to see that…………. :)

  • Evan

    @DRJ1: True true

  • I love Green

When Shelden went to pass it to TA at the end there, you can read Rondo’s lips he’s screaming “NO!” but he threw it and Kobe got an easy 3.

  • I love Green

Oh boy, its going to be the game 1 3rd quarter all over again. KG still playing like shit on defense, and bad rebounding to start.

  • http://hoopstersworld.blogspot.com miss j.moxie

So the second half hasn’t started too well.

  • RBD

If KG doesn’t defend he’s useless because he can’t hang with this L.A. frontline on the boards.

  • http://hoopstersworld.blogspot.com miss j.moxie

    How depressing.

  • complexity

Ever since the last time Ray took a shot, they’ve went down by 15 points?

  • pam

i am sooo angry right now. asshole refs on that pierce foul. kg looks like he is 100 years old.

  • Jay P

KG is late on every possession, he’s not rotating, he’s biting on up fakes.

He looks downright god awful right now.

Pierce foul was one of the worst calls I’ve seen in a long time.

  • RBD

We’re watching the end of the KG era tonight.

    Metaphorically if not literally.

  • complexity

Just an idea, let’s get ray the ball too. It wouldn’t shock me if we ignore him for the entire third quarter.

  • Evan

    WTF RONDO

  • Evan

    Wow Pierce… really?

  • complexity

I can’t think of any other team in the league that wouldn’t even give a heat check to someone who scored 27 points in the first half. Are you kidding me?

  • Evan

These refs are so f*#king bad

  • pam

what a block!!! and again another horrrrrible foul call. what is up with these refs????

  • RBD

    @complexity

    Totally agree. Idiotic.

  • Jay P

Refs suck, robbed of two clean blocks.

  • Jay P

Pierce and KG look terrible today.

At least Pierce is helping defensively though. KG is useless in the floor right now.

  • RBD

Refs have also called two phantom fouls on Kobe.

    Just sayin’.

  • Sophomore

They did call the phantoms on Kobe… but LA has 35 free throws, Boston 13.

  • Evan

@RBD: You mean the shoulder throw at Ray and the pushout on Rondo? Because I can’t agree those are phantom fouls man.

  • Sophomore

E.g., Pao Gasol just got completely bailed out.

  • RBD

    @Sophomore

Agree we could have had more calls but we’re not playing inside as much as they are. It’s not supposed to be even.

That noted – the refs have made these two games borderline unwatchable.

  • DRJ1

@RBD– this might literally be very near the end of KG’s career…. if he continues to suck like this in this series… I’m not sure he’ll play another year…. probably, but not sure. Certainly, unless there’s a MAJOR turnaround…. KG is no longer the KG we knew.

  • pilgrimtraveller

37 to 14 free throw attempts.

  • Evan

There’s just too much dead wood on this team. Too many underachievers. Glen Davis, Perk, thin bench.

  • complexity

Ray played the whole third quarter with two shots. Rondo played too long. Pierce hasn’t made anything. KG is useless. And Perkins has been horrible on offense.

The games tied, are you kidding me?

  • pam

i hate when rondo tries to run the shot clock down. not just his fault. just no one except a screener even moves. cmon pierce and ray ray

  • Jay P

Rondo is exhausted, we’re gonna have to see some of Nate in the 4th.

  • pilgrimtraveller

kg isn’t done. remember what they said earlier this year about the injury: he won’t be back to full strength until next year. even then, he probably won’t be what he was, but he’ll be more explosive than he is now.

  • http://hoopstersworld.blogspot.com miss j.moxie

    Ugh.

  • RBD

    @DRJ1

    Completely agree.

It’s sad but true – KG looks like he doesn’t belong out there.

I think no matter what happens this series (and it certainly looks like the Lakers are the better team) the window closes and Danny looks to retool this team around Rondo.

Think we’re getting rid of Perk as well.

  • Sophomore

@Jay P – yes. I think Doc made a mistake not putting Nate in when Kobe went to the bench.

  • http://espn.com travis zen

KG completely sucks tonight..offense and defense bullshit..

  • JMM

    Finish!

  • RBD

    @complexity

That kind of makes me optimistic.

One quarter left – win this and mentally, everything changes.

  • http://www.celticshub.com Zach Lowe

I have no idea how the Celtics didn’t just go down by 6 or 8 there. The entire offense is running on fumes, creating broken plays.

  • Sophomore

Bill Simmons: “Little known fact: Boston’s end of the quarter offense is called “The Clogged Toilet.”"

  • Coolin

It is soooooo difficult for Boston to make a layup. I have no faith when they are driving to the rim.

    FT differential is unbelievable.

  • pilgrimtraveller

5 on kobe. do the refs dare to give him a 6th?

  • complexity

@RBD, I’m very optimistic, don’t get me misconstrued.

  • Jay P

Wow Huuuuuuuge surprise, Kg gets beat on the boards and Bynum gets an easy put back… we haven’t seen any of that yet.

  • pilgrimtraveller

does anyone here have a working link to the game? my atdhe signal isn’t working now.

  • http://www.celticshub.com Zach Lowe

    I can’t take this tension.

  • Sophomore

It is genuinely sad to see Garnett miss that 18 footer so badly

  • http://hoopstersworld.blogspot.com miss j.moxie

Even on D, something’s up with KG. He can’t even rebound. Van Gundy beat me to it, but I was gonna say, KG isn’t even securing rebounds. All he does is jump up, touch the ball, and leave it to go wherever.

  • Evan

    The very definition of phantom.

  • RBD

Get KG out and get Sheed in.

This should be obvious by now.

  • pam

again refs killing us. foul call on ray ray but he took a swipe over bryant but missed him. no contact from perk. cmon refs are you kidding??? ahhhhhhhh

  • Jay P

Worst shot I’ve ever seen KG put up…

And where the hell was that contact from Perk. Great finish from Kobe, BS and 1.

  • Sophomore

Wow. Didn’t see any contact in that Kobe replay. After he shoots it’ll be Lakers 39 free throws, Celtics 16.

  • http://celticshub.com Dee

Not getting calls…not securing their defensive boards…not taking care of the ball. This is a nightmare. We cannot lose this game!! Too much invested and expended.

  • http://www.celticshub.com Zach Lowe

All things considered, this is the best game of Bynum’s career. ESPN box has him for seven blocks, 21 points on 10 shots.

  • Evan

There’s more money to be made in a town like LA if the Lake Show keeps rolling and the revenues keep piling up vs. a small town like Boston. They know how to balance their books. They know how to influence their referees…they’ve only been doing it forever.

  • pam

im sorry but as much as kg and pierce have sucked today, if we lose its def on the refs

  • Sophomore

Yow. PP is 2-11 from the field.

  • RBD

    @Evan

    Oh please.

They’d make more money if the series was tied 1-1.

  • Kjbuckhoops

They showed a clip early in the game of KG massaging his shoulder…might explain his swatting at the ball…don’t be surprised if we find out down the road that his shoulder is injured

  • pilgrimtraveller

artest is reverting to his mean, and he is mean

  • Evan

    GASOL IS CRYING

  • Evan

Oh I didn’t know you were privilege to ABC/ESPN’s books.

  • Sophomore

@Evan – Gasol has one of the most consistent cry faces in basketball. Dude shoulda played soccer.

  • RBD

    @Evan

    More games = more money.

    Try and keep up.

  • Kjbuckhoops

Would love to see one of ray’s sneaky pump fake and penetrates here…they are selling out so hard on the 3 (for good reason of course)

  • Sophomore

That was the ugliest made shot of the game.

  • pam

that was a foul on kobe. he should be out by now. i hate the refs

  • complexity

Doc Rivers with the play of the game, tough game of the play!

  • RBD

    DOC RIVERS!

  • Sophomore

I don’t know what was better about that – the Celtics beating the Lakers’ press or Kobe going into hero mode and wasting a possession.

  • Sophomore

WTF is Kobe’s range? Dude just hit a 30-footer.

  • Sophomore

Lakers get a lucky break – Artest fouls out.

  • complexity

Now what are you guys going to say about the refs when everything is going the celtics way?

  • Sophomore

I think we have a new strategy – rest Rondo for the first six minutes of the fourth quarter and he’ll be the energizer bunny the rest of the way.

  • pam

cmon put sheed in the game for perk for free throws. please doc

  • complexity

Lmao, who said “My Niggers” that loud. That might be a minor controversy tomorrow, that’s not local TV.

  • http://www.celticshub.com Zach Lowe

    FINISH THIS

  • RBD

Game of the year so far?

  • http://hoopstersworld.blogspot.com miss j.moxie

    Thank God.

  • Sophomore

Great finish by Cs, but Lakers also went brain-dead. They took Gasol out of the offense and, inexplicably, kept Ron Artest in.

  • RBD

    @Sophomore

Wasn’t it just magic watching Artest dribble around and force a contested off-balance jumper?

  • Jay P

Bryant 8-20, regression to the mean.

I think Nate’s 6 minutes in the 4th were the story within the story of this game. He gave some big minutes there that got Rondo the rest he needed to close out the game.

I can’t say enough about it, that 6 minutes alone was worth the trade. Timely scoring, played great defense, he impressed me a lot.

  • pilgrimtraveller

complexity, it’s simple, the refs sucked wind. the celtics won despite the refs. kobe should have fouled out.

  • pilgrimtraveller

    also, what jay p. said

  • sacbobv

To the Laker fan who said something earlier about being chumpified: How’s it feel to be CHUMPIFIED at your home court?

  • LStrike from Australia

Lovely work Celtics, I wish I was able to watch you down the Lakers live.

  • Sophomore

@RBD – yes – I was in awe of Ron’s decision-making there. I can just see Kobe and Phil taking his head off in the locker room.

  • JMM

    The C’s finished. Excellent.

  • Jay P

Noone should be surprised by that, he did the same in the Phx series. Remember the wild 3 he took, with the game tied, with time on the clock?

People forget about that because of the fluke lucky ass put back he had to win that game.

  • joe

didn’t i say after game 1 to not panic? Celts respond well after losses

  • yordgreat

    yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • JMM

RBD: Yes, game of this year so far.

  • Sophomore

I just realized- 10 turnovers in the first half, which hurt badly, but only 3 in the second half. Huge.

  • RBD

That was probably the best fourth quarter we’ve played all playoffs. It was smart of us to blow our double-digit lead EARLIER in the game :+)

  • complexity

    Ray Allen & RONDO !!!!!!!!!!

  • I love Green

How do you like our R’s LA? Ray and Rajon made up for Pierce and KG’s bad offensive games.

  • http://www.hotmail.com God, the Creator

Ray Allen stole my jump shot….I wan’t it back!

  • mitch
